Today's Topic: Head to Toe Assessment πŸ§‘πŸ¦Ά

A Head to Toe Assessment is used to assess a casualty for signs of injury.

An exhaustive process which checks the health status of all major body systems, it should be completed as a secondary assessment only AFTER the DRSABCD Management Steps have been undertaken.

Systematically searching the patient region by region, starting from the head down, all injuries should be noted for further treatment or management as required.

A Head to Toe Assessment should take around 10 minutes to complete and is a great tool for identifying possible injuries which may have been overlooked in the initial Primary (DRSABCD) Assessment.

Would you know how to complete a Head to Toe assessment? πŸ˜‰

Stay safe and have a great weekend!

Today's Topic: Croup πŸ‘Ά

Croup is an upper airway infection which causes swelling of the voice box and windpipe, making it difficult to breathe and causing a distinctive 'barking' cough.

Generally occurring in children - especially those aged 6 months to 3 years old - the viral infection is highly contagious and largely spread through droplets coughed or sneezed into the air or by touching a contaminated surface.

Although symptoms of croup are generally worse at night, most cases can be treated at home, resolving themselves within 3 to 4 days.

In instances where the child is struggling to breathe, immediate medical assistance should always be sought πŸš‘

So - what are the symptoms of croup, how is it best treated and when should further medical advice be sought?

Rug up and have a great weekend ahead 🫢

Today's Topic: Burns πŸ”₯

With the weather getting cooler, out come the hot water bottles, heaters and pots of steamy soup - all perfect culprits for causing a burn!

Put simply, a burn occurs when there is damage to the skin or deeper tissues caused by hot liquids, fire, electricity, chemicals or the sun.

The severity of a burn is based on the size and depth of the burn.

Most burns (thankfully) are classified as 'Superficial Burns' (First Degree), only affecting the top layer of skin and requiring some very basic first aid treatment at home.

'Full Thickness Burns' (Third Degree) are far more serious, affecting not only the skin but the underlying tissue as well. These burns require immediate medical treatment and may even prove life threatening.

Ironically, a Superficial Burn will generally result in varying degrees of pain and discomfort, whereas a Superficial Burn is generally painless, due to the damage caused to the nerve.

In all instances of burns, it is imperative to run these under cold running water for no less than 20 minutes to help limit the severity of the burn and prevent any further damage.

With many old wives tales floating around about the best ways to treat a burn, would you know how to classify and treat one? And what should you NOT do when dealing with a burn?

Have a great weekend and remember to always show extra care around open fires, heaters, hot liquids and other burn risks and to be extra vigilant with children exposed to these elements too.

Take care and have a great weekend πŸ™Œ

This Friday marks World Blood Donor Day 🩸

In Australia, it’s estimated that 1 in 3 people will need blood or blood products in their lifetime, whether it be to treat blood and cancer related diseases, for use in surgery or as a result of suffering a traumatic injury. From a First Aid perspective, one of our first steps is always to try and minimise or stop any excessive blood loss so as to avoid a fatal outcome β›‘

To keep up with this demand, 29,000 donations are required EACH WEEK, however each year, only one in 30 people - or 3% of Australians - give blood.

With one blood donation having the potential to save up to 3 lives, we encourage everyone to consider donating blood on a regular basis, if you are able to 🫢

The lifeblood.com.au is a great resource which shows the current supply of each blood type broken down by state, and provides great information on blood donation eligibility and your donor centre locations.

This World Blood Donor Day, why not roll up your sleeve and do your part to help those in need - after all, you never know when yourself or a loved one may be on the receiving end of requiring a blood donation ❀️

Today’s Topic: Eye Injuries πŸ‘

An eye injury can be a scary occurrence, with ongoing damage to vision always a key concern.

Generally speaking, eye injuries fall into one of two main categories:
❌ Embedded objects in the eye
❌ Foreign bodies in the eye

… both of which require different treatments.

In the case of an embedded object, the focus should be on securing the item and NOT trying to remove it at all. This will need to be done by a medical expert to limit and help prevent any further damage to the eye.

In the case of a foreign body in the eye, the focus should instead be on trying to gently flush the object out of the eye, with treatment for this condition generally able to be done at home.

So – what steps should be undertaken to best treat both types of injury and what simple measures can be taken to help prevent eye injuries? πŸ€”

Have a lovely weekend ahead.

The Herald Sun recently reported that 'deadly sudden cardiac arrests have skyrocketed in Victioria' - with a staggering 20% increase in sudden cardiac arrests in the past 5 years.

Even more startling is that only 5% of these patients survive, with the latest Ambulance Victoria figures revealing that of the 7,830 people whose heart stopped as a result of a sudden cardiac arrest in 2022/23, only 388 of these people survived. Only 139 of these people were treated with an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

Highlighting the importance of the need to learn life saving CPR AND have immediate acces to AED's, the article also outlined the ""Defib in Your Street"" project - an initiative which aims to install accessible AED's within 400m of every resident and provide free CPR training in Victorian postcodes with the highest occurence rate of cardiac arrest.

Better education and access to life saving skills and equipment is obviously something that we are in full support of - let's all work together to help save lives and turn some of these devastating statistics around! 🫢

We were lucky enough to attend a number of educational expos and conferences recently including The Monash Manningham Principals Conference on 16th May and The Independent Primary School Heads of Australia (IPSHA) which ran from 23rd – 25th May, organised superbly by The Conference Manager.

Prior to this we also attended the Southern Regional Catholic Administration Officers and Bursars Conference Day on May 14th, which was supported by our friends at GM Sponsors.

Again promoting the need for all key stakeholders, teaching staff and students at local schools to learn the important skills of life-saving CPR, we had a great time and met a lot of wonderful people – many of whom we hope to be training up soon! Afterall, you can never have enough people in your local community knowing how to save a life πŸ˜‰πŸ™Œ

Today’s Topic: Knocked out Tooth 🦷

With sports season back in full swing, it's not uncommon for a seemingly innocent fall, bump or knock to the face to result in an unfortunate mishap to those pearly whites! 🫣

For younger children who have had a baby tooth knocked out, it is always recommended NOT to insert this back into the mouth, as it may cause permanent damage to the adult (secondary) tooth sitting below the gum.

For adult teeth which are knocked out with the root still attached, there is a good chance the tooth will survive if placed back into it's original position straight away. This should only be done if the casualty is fully conscious and the tooth is whole however.

❌ Never attempt to put any form of object - including a tooth - back into the mouth of an unconscious person, as this can easily result in choking ❌

So - how do you best treat a knocked out baby and adult tooth until further assistance can be sought from a dentist or healthcare professional? And what simple steps can be undertaken to help minimise the risk of tooth injuries?

Look after those pearly whites and keep smiling this weekend 😁

Meet Teena πŸ‘‹

One of our newer team members here at Revive2Survive, Teena's background is in fitness - so she knows a lot about the human body and how it works! πŸƒβ€β™€οΈπŸ’ͺ

Previously a corporate trainer for an insurance company, Teena has dedicated the better part of the last year to becoming the best First Aid Trainer she can be, saying "I feel so proud that the information I am providing can and will save lives. It makes me happy that people from all walks of life feel confident leaving my class to step in and help someone at possibly the lowest point of their life."

Having helped in many First Aid situations during her time volunteering in AFL, basketball, cheerleading and athletics, Teena's most recent first aid experience occurred in a class she was teaching when an attendee suffered a mild asthma attack which very quickly progressed to severe. Springing into action, quick thinking Teena grabbed a spacer from our office to help administer the asthma puffer correctly, ensuring the medication travelled to the attendees lungs (and not just her mouth or stomach) - with the important lesson here being to always carry a spacer if you suffer from asthma, as they are not just for kids! πŸ˜‰

A registered First Aid Responder, Teena currently teaches our HLTAID009 Provide CPR, HLTAID011 Provide First Aid and HLTAID012 Early Education First Aid courses. Her fun fact is that she is an ex Zumba instructor of over a decade and was also a cheerleader for the Melbourne Tigers Basketball Team πŸ―πŸ€

Highly passionate about fitness and First Aid, we are thrilled to have Teena as part of our team and thank her for all of the energy, enthusiasm and experience she brings to her role and the many lucky attendees completing her training courses πŸ™Œ

Today’s Topic: Shock πŸ‘€

In medical terms, 'shock' refers to a sudden drop in blood pressure which reduces the flow of oxygen and nutrients to a person's vital organs such as their brain, heart and lungs. This results in there not being enough blood circulating around the body and if not restored, can prove to be a life-threatening medical emergency.

There are many symptoms of shock including changes to breathing, a rapid heartbeat, dizziness, nausea and loss of consciousness. Shock can result for a number of reasons, such as a severe allergic reaction, significant blood loss, dehydration, or as a result of another medical emergency such as poisoning or burns.

In all instances of suspected shock, it is imperative to follow the DRSABCD Action Plan and seek emergency help by calling 000 as soon as possible to help limit any long term damage or even death.

Would you know the signs of shock to look out for and how best to treat it until medical help arrives? πŸ€”

Alongside giving us an excuse to show off our new tablecloths - can you tell we're just a little bit proud of our new branding?! πŸ˜‰ - more so, it gave us a wonderful platform to talk to some of the key stakeholders of our local schools about the importance of equipping both their staff and their students with the imperative skills of life saving CPR and First Aid β›‘

We had a great time at the event, met a lot of wonderful people and look forward to continuing to spread the important message - and skills - of learning CPR within our local communities 🫢

Today’s Topic: Sprains and Strains 🦡πŸ’ͺ

Sprains and strains are a common injury, occurring when the soft tissues which connect, support and surround the bones and organs in our bodies become injured.

❌ A β€˜sprain’ refers to a stretched or torn ligament – the soft tissue which connects two bones to a joint
❌ A β€˜strain’ refers to a stretched or torn muscle or tendon – the soft tissue which connects muscle to bone

Common during exercise and playing sport, any form of falling, twisting or getting hit by a force can cause a sprain or strain. Although the signs and symptoms for sprains and sprains do vary slightly, the treatment plan is the same for both and can easily be remembered using the acronym "RICER" - standing for:

βœ”οΈ R - Rest
βœ”οΈ I - Ice
βœ”οΈ C - Compress
βœ”οΈ E - Elevate
βœ”οΈ R - Refer / Report

Would you know the signs to look for when diagnosing a sprain or strain and know how best to treat one?

Take it easy and have a great weekend! πŸ‘

β›‘ It’s First Aid Friday! β›‘

Today’s Topic: Heart Health & Heart Attacks ❀️

As the Heart Foundation's annual Heart Week comes to a close, what better topic is there for today's First Aid Friday than that of heart health?

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) is an umbrella term used to describe a whole range of heart conditions including diseased vessels, structural problems and blood clots.

Accounting for approx. 120 deaths PER DAY in Australia - or one death every 12 minutes* - many CVD's go largely undetected, with the first sign that someone may be affected by one only being when they suffer a heart attack or stroke.

Like most things, you're best placed to survive a heart attack if you recognise the symptoms early and seek emergency assistance ASAP. Interestingly, research has shown women to have slightly different symptoms when experiencing a heart attack to those of men, which can often be overlooked or go unrecognised until it is too late.

So - what are the signs of a heart attack for both men and women, what should we do if we think someone is suffering one and are there any simple steps we can all take to improve our heart health and in the process, help limit our risk of CVD's and suffering a heart attack? 🫢

As Heart Week wraps up for this year, remember that your heart is with you for life and is also what gives you life! So be sure to look after yours each and every day and make sure you also know how to re-start a heart, by way of administering life saving CPR and the use of a defibrillator, should you ever need to (get in touch with us if you need any help with that of course! πŸ˜‰)

* Heartfoundation.org.au

08/05/2024

It's the Heart Foundation's Heart Week - so let's talk about what happens when a heart stops beating πŸ’”

Each day, 55 Australians will suffer a cardiac arrest. For the 80% of these occurring to those not in hospital at the time, less than 8% of these people will survive.

It’s a pretty shocking figure 😞

For every 1 minute a heart in cardiac arrest does NOT receive CPR, survival rates drop by 10%. After just just 10 minutes, the damage caused is essentially irreversible.

The best chance of survival for those suffering a cardiac arrest is with the use of a defibrillator, a device which applies an electric charge or current to the heart to restore a normal heatbeat. If used within one minute of cardiac arrest, survival rates are as high as 90%.

This Heart Week, why not take some time to ensure you are ready to re-start a heart, should you ever need to. Are you fully trained in CPR and do you have easy access to a defibrillator - especially in public settings - should you need one?

We can of course help with both! To find out more:

06/05/2024

It's the Heart Foundation's Heart Week, an important opportunity for health professionals and members of the public to have vital conversations about heart health and the steps required to help reduce the risk of heart disease ❀️

We think hearts are pretty special things and deserve a whole lot more love and credit than we give them 🫢

For example - did you know that the average human heart beats over 100,000 times per day? Or that the female heart on average does an extra 8 beats per minute than that of a male heart?

This week and every week, let's give our hearts the recognition they deserve and show them a little bit of extra TLC πŸ₯°

Today’s Topic: Treatment of Basic Bleeding 🩸

It’s not uncommon to feel queasy and panic at the sight of blood, whether it be others or your own.

Falls, scrapes, scratches and cuts can all result in bleeding of varying degrees and in most instances, can easily be managed at home.

The β€œRID” method is a great one to keep in mind when dealing with treatment of basic bleeding and stands for:
βœ”οΈ R – Rest & Restrict movement
βœ”οΈ I – Immobilise the part
βœ”οΈ D - Direct Pressure – applying pressure and a sterile dressing to the wound

For any bleeding which is profuse, cannot be controlled by firm, direct pressure and / or has the casualty displaying signs of shock, it is important to seek medical care ASAP by calling 000 to ensure this does not become life-threatening.

Take it easy and have a great weekend 🫢
