McLeod Innovations

As an artist I aim for my creations to be held to connect to the sense of touch through functionality.

My work is inspired by textures and colour from nature, and more recently my designs consider both environmental and human impacts. I am a part time Melbourne based artist who works mainly in timber & resin art. Trained as a boilermaker, I learnt early techniques for forging and machining of metals which allowed me to extend my creativity. I started creating pieces in metal early in my training and eventually have moved to having a creative focus with timbers.

Oak serving blocks
These pieces came from a mate’s tree planted when his children were very young. This project started with receiving a phone call and me advising that the timber was green and to store in the back of your shed to be picked up in about 2 years when dry. A couple of months latter my mate, timber and a nice bottle of scotch arrived at the workshop. Time to find a drying solution and fast. The solution: Microwave oven.
About the blocks: Timber is Oak, and blocks are approximately 30cm in diameter. Dried in the microwave, milled and cracks sealed with a dark resin. Blocks were finished to protect from heat and water.
