Vegetarian and vegan diets have been associated with some excellent health benefits, including an increased intake of dietary fibre, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

However, vitamin B12 can be elusive in a vegetarian and vegan diet. In my latest blog post, I take a deep dive into how vegetarians and vegans can maintain a balanced diet, void of nutritional deficiencies.

Click the link in bio to read more about dietary sources of vitamin B12, and maintaining a balanced, healthy diet while following a vegetarian or vegan diet.

How can we teach the next generation about planetary health, and why does it matter? 01/04/2022

As a nutritionist, and more importantly, as a parent I found the process of writing this article on planetary health education for children both incredibly educational and terrifying.

🌏 As we are seeing play out in our news each day, climate change is here now. The planet we are passing on to our children will be very different from today, making the process of educating our children on planetary health as important as any other skill they are taught in school today.

🥗 In my practice as a nutritionist at Phillips Nutrition, lifestyle medicine is something I believe in wholeheartedly, and it is a honour to be included in the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine blog. I support my clients through dietary modifications, supplementation and lifestyle medicine. Without which, for many clients, nutritional interventions may be less effective.

🌱 I would love to know, what are your thoughts on planetary health education for children?

How can we teach the next generation about planetary health, and why does it matter? A summary of planetary health and why it’s so important Planetary health describes the relationship between the health of the earth and its population. This relationship is co-dependent, and involves a sustainable ecosystem maintained by humans acting as the stewards of the natural resources from ...

Tonight’s dinner was much needed. We have had an incredible summer, getting away pretty much every weekend to be with family and get in as much beach time as possible, we have absolutely loved every minute. But we are getting tired, we are getting irritable and I found that we were starting to cut corners with what we were eating out of convenience.
So tonight we reset, back to our normal meals, back to all of the veg, gorgeous protein and whole grains.

Last nights dinner. I was exhausted last night, but my body desperately needed a dinner focussing on plant foods with a balanced amount of carbs, protein and fats, and this bowl ticked all of the boxes.

Olive Oil Intake Tied to Reduced Mortality 15/01/2022

A great article demonstrating the health benefits of olive oil

Olive Oil Intake Tied to Reduced Mortality Compared with those who rarely or never consume olive oil, any intake greater than a half tablespoon per day was associated with lower mortality over follow-up in a new analysis.

As we head into the festive season after another massive year, we may find ourselves being surrounded by alcohol at social gatherings.
While no one can be blamed for wanting to indulge and drown away the year or celebrate our achievements with family, friends and colleagues, an important consideration to make before consuming one-too-many drinks is what the alcohol you drink does to your body today and in the future.
Click on my blog post to learn more about the impact of alcohol on gastrointestinal health.

Tonight’s dinner was beetroot and carrot kangaroo burgers with salad - high in fibre, a good source of iron and protein and delicious.
To make the beetroot, carrot and kangaroo burgers:
Grate 1 small beetroot and 1 large carrot and finely chop 1 small onion (Thermomix - 10secs/speed 4)
Sauté vegetables until soft (speed 1/5mins/100degrees) then mix through 1 tablespoon of chia seeds, 1 egg and 500g of kangaroo mince with a pinch of salt and pepper.
Combine all ingredients until evenly distributed (30secs/reverse/speed1).
Form into burgers and cook on the bbq.
Enjoy!

In some way or another, we all feel stress each day, particularly now in the midst of a pandemic and coming out of lockdown. Stress can be big, it can be small. We can be acutely aware of the stress we are experiencing or it can be subconscious or more chronic. Regardless of the type of stress, our body needs to respond to it to maintain balance. When left unchecked however, stress can lead to changes and potentially disease.

I have written an article describing some of the physiological changes stress has on the body and how it is associated with changes to blood sugar control, the immune system, memory, cognition and body composition. Click the link to read more.
