Most Australians know “Shevchenko” as a Ukrainian football player but Taras Shevchenko (1814-1861) was a vitally important figure in Ukrainian history, admired as a poet, writer, humanist thinker, and patriot who campaigned for Ukraine's national liberation. He also made significant contributions to Ukrainian art as a talented painter and graphic artist.

Taras Shevchenko's writings formed the foundation for the modern Ukrainian literature to a degree that he is also considered the founder of the modern written Ukrainian language.

For his revolutionary poems which were circulated in manuscript copies, Shevchenko was sentenced to exile as a private in the Orenburg Field Battalion.

Approving the verdict, Tsar Nicholas I added with his own hand: "Under strictest surveillance, with the prohibition to write and paint."

Eventually, exhausted, weakened and severely ill from the ordeals he had suffered in exile, in prisons and in Ukraine, Shevchenko passed away in St. Petersburg on the morning of March 10, 1861.

The poet was first buried at the Smolensk Cemetery in St. Petersburg. Fulfilling his wish to be buried in Ukraine, his friends transported his body by train, and then by horse-drawn carriage to his native land, arriving in Kyiv on May 18. On May 20 his remains travelled by steamship to Kaniv, Shevchenko’s final resting place by the Dnipro river.

NOT A DATE FOR CELEBRATION - CHANGE THE DATE!

January 26 1788 is the day Sir Arthur Phillip raised the British flag at Warrane (Sydney Cove) to claim the land as a British Colony. This day marks the beginning of a long and brutal colonisation of people and land.

On 26 January each year people in Australia are asked to celebrate a national holiday, now called Australia Day. But Australia Day celebrations are not generally embraced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, as well as some non-Indigenous people. For many First Nations people this day is recognised as Survival Day or Invasion Day. Because from this day in 1788 onwards, First Nations people suffered massacres, land theft, stolen children and widespread oppression at the hands of the colonising forces. Most Ukrainians, oppressed by the Soviet Regime would understand what it means when your land is stolen, your culture is attacked and your people suffer due to oppression.

Since the first Day of Mourning, many thousands of Australians gather each year to protest the celebration of 26 January. The scale of the protests grows yearly, as more and more people come to understand the true history of Australia, and what 26 January represents for First Nations community.

UDIA acknowledges the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and live. We pay respect to Elders past, present, and emerging. # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # # #

This year, there were no celebrations, only a heightened alert for Russian attacks.

As Australian Ukrainian community has celebrated in various cities in states, here is how you can celebrate: Cook national dishes (borsch, holubtsi, varenyki), watch a Ukrainian film (Stop-Zemlya, My Thoughts Are Silent, The Earth is Blue as an Orange, Babushka of Chernobyl) or donate!

A diaspora is a population that is scattered across regions separate from their geographic place of origin. Historically, the term was used to refer to the mass dispersion of groups of people from their indigenous territories.

“The Australian Ukrainian community traces its foundation to the arrival of post-World War 2 refugees from war torn Europe. These refugees were termed Displaced Persons and began arriving in 1948… The incorporation of recently arrived Ukrainians into existing community structures is of high priority to the community.“ - Find out more on ozeukes.com website

Some good news!

VICTORY!

UNESCO has inscribed Ukraine’s Borshch soup on the global list of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

This is an important victory in Ukraine's long fight to confirm its national identity in terms of culture, language and history. The decision was approved after a fast-track process prompted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the "negative impact on this tradition" caused by the war, UNESCO said.

Starting a business in Australia is quite simple. Most small businesses must register for ABN number and most humanitarian visas, once approved allow you to register. An ABN is a unique 11 digit number that identifies your business to the government and community. You can apply for an ABN and other key business registrations through the Business Registration Service

You can use an ABN to:
• identify your business to others when ordering and invoicing
• avoid pay as you go (PAYG) tax on payments you get
• claim goods and services tax (GST) credits
• get an Australian domain name for your website

Registering for ABN is free! Once your ABN is approved, create your social media pages, add your business to directories and create a website !

Did you know that Melbourne Cinémathèque is throwing a Ukrainian film festival on 20 July – 3 August 2022 at

“2022 marks the centenary of Ukrainian feature filmmaking. This season assembles six masterworks of Ukrainian cinema, all canonised by the Dovzhenko Centre (the Ukrainian national film archive in Kyiv) and includes three landmark titles from the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic era (1922–91) – all of which were at ideological odds with the official doctrines of their times – and three from the 21st century. Also included are remarkable “silent” films from both eras.” Check their event and let us know which movie you have decided to see!
