Compromising on Security - It isn't Worth the Risk - Best Practice
How many of us have, at one time or another, needed to run down to the shops to pick up a bottle of milk or loaf of bread, and told ourselves that we don’t need to wear a seatbelt because it’s only a 30-second trip? Often, the arguments we use to justify our decisions in situations such as these centre around the premise of, ‘the bad thing won’t happen to me.’
With recent widespread and well-publicised cyber-attacks against Optus and Medibank, there is no better time to review your practice’s security processes. With billions of people and millions of organisations around the world, what are the chances that you will be chosen as a target?

IS REMOTE WORKING PUTTING YOUR BUSINESS AT RISK?
Our leading cyber security expert has outlined how remote working will lead to heightened vigilance among Australian healthcare businesses.
Four in five organisations expect the practice of remote working to persist long term, according to research released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in April 2021.
Kieran O’Connor is the general manager, Australia and New Zealand at Jamf, said letting employees spend all or part of the week on the tools at home is fuelling another trend: the consumerisation of corporate ICT.
This means more Apple in the enterprise, particularly in SMEs with a preponderance of younger workers, whose natural predilection is for all things Apple.
“Although it won’t happen in a single year, it’s likely that within the decade, we will see iPads and MacBooks edging Windows-based devices out of pole position,” Mr O'Connor said.
He notes that many Australian businesses have ramped up their cyber defences in the wake of an extraordinary onslaught of attacks across 2020 and 2021.
Yet the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) received more than 67,500 cybercrime reports in the 2020-21 financial year, an increase of around 13% in the previous period. Self-reported losses from cybercrime totalled more than $33 billion, according to the agency, which has warned businesses and organisations to remain hypervigilant.
“The increasing frequency of cybercriminal activity is compounded by the increased complexity and sophistication of their operations. The accessibility of cybercrime services – such as Ransomware as a Service – via the dark web increasingly opens the market to a growing number of malicious actors without significant technical expertise and without significant financial investment,” the ACSC’s Annual Cyber Threat Report 2020-21 noted.
Without rigorously secured devices, remote working employees very often represent a weak link in the cyber security chain, with their user credentials at risk of compromise or theft.
“That’s why stringent, zero-trust security regimes are likely to become even more popular this year, as organisations look to lock down off-site teams,” he said.
“Robust, secure device management solutions can help businesses address the productivity, security and support challenges generated by a remote or hybrid working model. Designed to enable businesses to take control of their digital fleets, these solutions allow administrators to automate the business of configuring, updating, securing and managing multiple devices.
“With thousands of organisations looking to do exactly this in 2022, expect to see device management solutions rise up in the priority list of ICT investments.”

As Victoria looks to be on track for opening up and getting dental clinics back to doing what you do best, have you asked the question?
"Is your IT ready?"
As Melbourne emerges from what we can only consider as a living nightmare, as people start to consider their dental requirements and needs it may be a great time to consider your IT support and its overall cost to your emerging clinic.
With a decade of experience in the dental arena and with the average annual spend being 41% less using an industry specific IT support company like IT4Dental, you could be saving $1000s off your annual IT spend.
With a dedicated arm to dental from Melbourne based healthcare IT company, you will have techs on hand who know your IT environment inside out!
And we are a confident bunch at IT4Dental, give us a chance to see what your month to month spend is with your current IT, if we can't beat it then lunch is on us, $30 Uber eats vouchers are ready to go for anyone who we can't lower cost and improve services.
And if nothing else it's a great guide to gauge with your current IT that you are paying the right amount, and hey! no one ever complained about a free lunch!
With tensions running higher than ever across the entire Australian healthcare sector, it may be a good time to consider staff safety on a different level, with more and more healthcare sites getting in touch about our PC based duress alarm, we can only see the trend growing, have a chat to one of our team today about a better option for staff safety www.duressalert.com.au 1300 366 911
We know the healthcare industry is seeing loads and demands over and above anything experienced in history, talk to us if you are struggling, we maybe able to offer free advice and support.
With more and more data breaches, passwords are somthing you can help minimise, but hey! We are just humans! its easy to fall into the trap, would you belive there are still millions maybe even billions of secure accounts with the password "Password123"! With automation and bots that can run millions of test hacks an hour, its only time 1. Time 2. Locked 3. Hacked
Is it time to have a look at new passwords? (Think of the puppy)
Every 40 seconds a business falls victim to a ransomware attack.
With IT4GP Investing more and more into our security infrastructure, should you be too? With more and more training for our managed clinics IT4GP are trying to futureproof all of the sites which depend on our services.
Think about that for a minute. The chances that your business, no matter the what size, is an exception are slim. It's not a matter of if your business will be attacked but when.
So what can you do to help protect your business against these attacks?
You need to invest in the best security technology and software your budget can buy of course and you need to make sure you are backing up your data and have a data recovery plan.
But one of the best ways to help protect your business is YOUR PEOPLE.
Your people can be your weakest link or your best line of defence against cyberattacks. If your employees don't know how to recognize and defend against these attacks, then your business is vulnerable.
Are you concerned about the security of your patient files? are your staff aware of daily risks when accessing 3rd party sites/applications? We off free guidance on how to make your site as secure as possible.
