Wellbeing is a combination of a person's physical, mental, emotional and social health.

Sometimes we get caught up in the busyness of work (and life) and forget (or do not prioritise) taking a break. However, taking regular breaks can, in fact, increase your productivity and wellbeing at work (and at home).

Let's explore why taking regular breaks is important for your workplace wellbeing.

๐„๐ง๐ก๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ ๐๐ซ๐จ๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ
Improved Focus and Concentration: Continuous work can lead to mental fatigue, reducing your ability to concentrate. Short breaks help to refresh the mind, making it easier to maintain focus and perform tasks efficiently.

Increased Creativity: Stepping away from your work can allow your brain to relax and reset. This can lead to new insights and creative solutions to problems.

Better Decision Making: Fatigue can impair decision-making abilities. Breaks can help clear your mind, and make better more thoughtful decisions.

๐๐จ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐–๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐›๐ž๐ข๐ง๐

Reduced Stress: Taking regular breaks helps to manage stress levels. It provides time to relax and can prevent burnout, promoting overall well-being.

Physical Health Benefits: Breaks that involve physical activity, such as walking or stretching, can reduce the risk of physical ailments associated with prolonged sitting, like back pain and eye strain. They say that sitting is the new smoking.

Enhanced Job Satisfaction: Breaks can improve your mood and make the workday more enjoyable, leading to higher job satisfaction.

๐“๐š๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  ๐๐ซ๐ž๐š๐ค๐ฌ ๐š๐ญ ๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ค:
Short, Frequent Breaks: Implement the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working for 25 minutes followed by a 5-minute break. This balances focused work with regular rest.

Physical Activity: Use breaks to move around, stretch, or take a short walk. Physical movement can rejuvenate the body and mind.

Mindfulness and Relaxation: Practising mindfulness or deep breathing exercises during breaks can reduce stress and improve mental clarity.

Social Interaction: Taking breaks to chat with colleagues can foster a sense of community and provide emotional support.

Accredited mental health social workers are among the professionals available to provide this crucial support. These experts blend compassion with specialised training to address a wide range of mental health challenges, from depression to trauma and substance abuse. Their holistic approach focuses on understanding underlying factors and advocating for comprehensive care. Whether in hospitals, community health centres, or private practices, these professionals play a vital role in guiding individuals towards healing and empowerment.

While both require tertiary studies (up to 6 years), there are some unique differences between the two disciplines.

Social work tends to see the individual as part of a wider system. If their functioning is impacted both the individual and the systems they operate in need to be addressed to improve functioning. The social worker supports the individual to use their resources to change the way they interact with the systems affecting them and/or intervene and advocate at a wider systems level to improve the function and quality of life of individuals.

In psychology, the frame for dysfunction sits more with the individual. At times, psychology may lean more toward a medical model of mental health, where the psychologist, while still a partner to the individual, is viewed as an expert who would guide intervention to improve function.

Having said that, both disciplines try to view the individual holistically through a biopsychosocial and spiritual lens.

Of course, these are huge generalisations and so there is a lot of overlap in the actual work of both disciplines and wide variations in each practitionerโ€™s approach.

Sadly, this can be the workplace attitude sometimes. Truly supporting employees means actually providing support. For example, reasonable adjustments, a stigma free workplace and allowing people to take time off for illness (physical or mental health).

Investing in wellbeing is a wise choice that pays off in the long run. By prioritising activities that promote physical and mental health, such as regular exercise, a balanced diet, mindfulness practices, and good sleep hygiene, you can potentially prevent costly health issues down the line.

In Australia, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) affects approximately 5.6% of the population in any given year. This statistic sheds light on the significant impact of trauma on individuals across the nation.

PTSD can result from various traumatic events, including but not limited to, natural disasters, accidents, violence, and military combat. It manifests through symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, and avoidance behaviours, disrupting daily life and relationships.

Effective management of PTSD involves a multifaceted approach, including therapy, medication, and support networks. However, stigma and misconceptions surrounding mental health can hinder individuals from seeking help.

A recent study into the National Study of Mental Health and Wellbeing of Australians found that 42.9% of people had lived with a mental health condition at some point in their life. That's almost 50% of the population.

Does this statistic surprise you?

Postpartum depression is a deeply challenging experience for many new mothers, yet it often carries a significant stigma in society.

Despite being a common and treatable condition, there remains a pervasive misconception that it reflects a personal failing or weakness.

This stigma can prevent women (and men) from seeking help, exacerbating their suffering, and delaying recovery.

It's crucial to combat this stigma by fostering understanding and support, encouraging open dialogue, and promoting access to mental health resources.

The Mediterranean diet is based on the traditional eating habits of countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, such as Greece, Italy, and Spain. It is characterized by a high intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and healthy fats such as olive oil and nuts. Fish and seafood are also consumed regularly, while red meat is limited.

Studies have shown that following a Mediterranean diet can have numerous health benefits. It has been linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, stroke, and certain types of cancer. In addition, it can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and improve insulin sensitivity.

But the benefits of the Mediterranean diet are not just physical. It has also been shown to have a positive impact on mental health. In one study, following a Mediterranean diet was associated with a lower risk of depression and improved cognitive function. Other research has suggested that it may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

Overall, the Mediterranean diet is a healthy and delicious way to improve your well-being. By incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet, and limiting your intake of processed foods and red meat, you can reap the many benefits of this eating pattern.

Taking care of yourself is essential for a healthy and happy life. Drinking enough water keeps your body hydrated and helps maintain cognitive function. Getting sunlight is also important as it provides you with vitamin D, which is necessary for strong bones and a healthy immune system. Breathing exercises help reduce stress and anxiety, allowing you to feel more relaxed and at peace. Remember, taking care of yourself is an act of self-love and self-respect. You're doing great, keep it up!

Mental health challenges may be a part of your life, but they don't encapsulate the full essence of who you are.

Beyond any diagnosis, there is a person with a specific identity, a personal history that has shaped them, and a unique personality that contributes to their character.

Christmas isn't a cheerful time for everybody. Connect with those around you.

During the festive season, it's often easy to overlook the silent struggles many of us conceal. Behind the joyful scenes may lie worries, distress, isolation, guilt, grief, and low self-worth.

Creating an illusion that everything is fine becomes a common facade, while in reality, we may be grappling with internal challenges beyond our capacity.

This serves as a gentle reminder to check in on those around us.

Offering a listening ear or simply being present can be the most valuable gift we give during this season. In times when the weight feels overwhelming, remember that it's okay not to be okay. This time of year can evoke a range of emotions - positive and negative - and that's okay.

If you find yourself struggling and not okay, please know that you are human and not alone.

Taking that challenging step to reach out and say, "I'm not okay" can be daunting, but when you're ready to talk, even if the words are unclear, reach out to a friend, a loved one, or a professional.

Always keep in mind that Lifeline Australia is just a call away. They're open 24/7 - 13 11 14.

There is always someone willing to listen, someone there for you. Even in the moments that feel isolating, you are never truly alone.

August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day.

Today we honour those who died of an overdose and support their families and friends who grieve. International Overdose Awareness Day aims to try and reduce the stigma associated with overdoses and raise awareness about overdose prevention.

In the year 2023, the overarching theme is "recognising those people who go unseen." This theme pays homage to every life impacted by overdose, not only those who have passed away but also encompassing the grieving families and friends. And extend this recognition to healthcare and support service professionals who offer strength and empathy to individuals with substance use disorders and first responders who play a pivotal role in saving lives.

In 2021, there were 1,732 overdose deaths in Australia. This excludes deaths relating to alcohol use. For comparison, there were 1,559 alcohol-induced deaths in Australia in 2021.

Sixty-eight per cent of overdose deaths were accidental โ€“ 1,180 in total. This figure has continued to rise over the past two decades and has exceeded the road toll since 2014.

Chances are, as a manager, you'll likely oversee an employee with mental illness during your career, even if you're unaware.

Mental illness is more common than perceived, affecting about 45% of Australians aged 16-85 at some point, with one in five experiencing it yearly.

Workers can develop mental illness before or during employment. Most handle it well without work disruption, some need short-term support, and a few require ongoing strategies.

While assumed to originate outside work, a distressing workplace or incident can worsen mental health conditions.

Research shows that job-related stress and psychosocial hazards are now major contributors to occupational disease and injury burdens.
