When we speak to Mums and parents, there are many questions and many unknowns.
* How many hours do they need to wear the helmet
* How long do they wear the helmet?
* Does it bother them sleeping?
* Do they cry?
* What will people think?
Hopefully, the experience shared by families will help you in your journey.
Did you know that 1 in 4 newborn babies has moderate to severe plagiocephaly and brachycephaly, commonly known as a flat head syndrome?
So⊠you are not alone.
At the start, youâre a little bit self-conscious; I got over it, and I donât let things like that bother me.
I was emotional when we got told, but everything was ok and for the greater good, long term, the right decision. It has already improved over such a short period."
"My husband was going to leave it due to the previous medical advice we received, but when he saw the scan results, we didnât question the decision of getting a helmet at all. Everything is ok; the helmet doesnât affect everyday life for him or us."
"At the start, it was difficult, just getting used to taking the helmet on and off. Not quite knowing how much to squeeze over his head, but it didnât bother him; no scratches, no bruises. "

Serkel helmets, made especially for you and your beautiful baby. Striving to make helmet therapy as easy and pleasant as possible whilst gently rounding your baby's head.
The Serkel helmets are manufactured in our facility in Port Melbourne. This allows us to send them to your clinic within about a week from your assessment.
"We had our helmet in the summer."
"I was a bit worried about overheating. It can be up to 45 degreeâs in the middle of summer, but she was fine. I changed the liner every day, and it was just easy."
"It might sound vain, but I wanted a Serkel helmet because of how they look. The helmet looked nice compared to other chunky helmets I looked at online. The helmet is light; itâs easy; Ally didnât know she had it on."
"You have this beautiful new baby to show off to the world, and you want them to look good."
"The look of the Serkel helmet absolutely lessens the embarrassment, looked nice and helped me make the decisions; it helped us a lot."
"Weâll always keep the helmet to show Ally when sheâs old that she wore it when she was a baby."
The recommended time to start helmet therapy is between 4 to 6 months. Starting at that age allows enough time for the helmet to resharpen the head into a round and beautiful shape.

A flattening of the skull can occur if your baby has a tendency to sleep in one position each night, therefore applying pressure to the same area of their head. As the flattened area develops, your baby may then become even more accustomed to that particular position, enhancing the flattening further. Or, their head may naturally roll into that position.
Brachycephaly, derived from the Greek language, is a condition in babies were the back of the head becomes flattened, causing the head to widen, and occasionally the forehead bulges out.
If your baby has a Brachycephaly head shape, do not worry.
This condition can be treated easily and successfully with the Serkel helmet.

Plagiocephaly does not usually affect the development of a baby's brain, but if left untreated, it may change their physical appearance by causing uneven growth of their face and head.

Treatment will depend on the seriousness of your childâs condition and the suspected cause for Plagio/Brachycephaly

Plagiocephaly occurs because the bones of a newborn baby's head are thin and flexible, so the head is soft and may change shape easily. Flattening the head in one area may happen if a baby lies with its head in the same position for a long time.

What do I do if I notice a flat spot and think it might be plagiocephaly?
Orthotist who specialise in paediatrics will be able to complete an assessment of your babies head using a gentle and easy white light scanner and help you make a decision if helmet therapy is the best decision for you and your baby. We have Orthotists in every state, contact us or our website for details.
Successful orthotic treatment for positional deformities relies on head growth, with 85% of postnatal head growth occurring in the first year of life. Head Circumference percentiles from the World Health Organisation (WHO) have been documented and show that from birth to 1 year it is estimated that a child who is in the 50th percentile will grow approximately 11cm circumferentially, whereas from 1 year to 2 years old the head will only grow approximately 2cm.
Therefore, the treatment window for helmet therapy is in this time frame of greater growth, usually between 4-12 months of age.
Helmet therapy works by creating a space inside the helmet for the head to grow into where the ââflat spotsââ exist. The head isnât âpushedâ back into shape, the head growth is redirected into the flat parts of the skull.
Helmets are worn for 23hrs of the day to ensure that we can capture the maximum amount of head growth.
What causes plagiocephaly and can I do anything to prevent it?
Plagiocephaly develops when a baby spends too much time lying on his or her back or in a certain position. Babies heads are soft, general but continuous external force can cause the flattering in one spot.
In 1991, The Red Nose program recommended that babies should be placed on their backs to sleep, to reduce the risk of sudden unexpected deaths in infancy (SUDI). From 1989 to 2016, the rate of SUDI has decreased by 85% in Australia. This has correlated with an increase in the percentage of babies developing positional head shape deformities, as a result from sleeping on their backs.
What is plagiocephaly?
A flat spot on a baby's head.
It might be most noticeable when looking at a baby's head from above. The cheekbone and ear on the flat side might look pushed forward.
Varying a baby's head position can help. If it does not improve by the age four months, a helmet might be required.
Plagiocephaly does not cause brain damage or interfere with a baby's development. Factors mean a baby is more likely to develop plagiocephaly include muscular torticollis, back sleeping, reduced tummy time, prematurity.

đTestimonial from our baby Yasmine's Mum -
We are both so glad we decided to go ahead with the treatment and get a helmet made for our daughter after the scan. The last thing weâd ever want in the future is to regret not having done all that we could for her. The helmets are not only very lightweight but look super cute! We couldnât believe the improvement the helmet made after just one month of wearing it!
