This is a highly informative article about oral s*x by Intimate Ecology - Moira Bradfield, world renowned va**nal microbiome specialist. Possibly more risky than most of us would have guessed. Although not really surprising.

One often overlooked influence on va**nal microbiome stability is oral s*x. Any activity with fluid sharing has the potential to share microbes, disrupt pH and impact the microbiome. Oral s*x - direct to the vulvova**nal anatomy has the potential to be a disruptor in already at risk situations.

The oral microbiome is conplex and carries bacteria and fungi that can contribute to oral health and disease (including STI). Some of these microbiota translocate to the va**na from oral s*x, direct and indirect interactions. For many people in health, oral s*x isn't a big challenge and I am a huge advocate for pleasure, but I will often suggest the avoidance of oral s*x or the introduction of barrier methods (glyde va**nal dams or ) while we work through va**nal health.

The influence of the oral microbiome on health is multifactorial. Surprisingly we don't see a large body of evidence of direct oral s*x impacts, e.g cohorts with va**nal microbiome measured before and after oral s*x. We do have studies that show:

😛 A relationship between oral microbiomes and pre- term birth risk (va**nal infection, uterine microbiome)

😛People who experience BV are more likely to have periodontal disease

😛A trend between oral s*x with an uncircumcised partner and periodontal disease

😛In HPV carriage and cervical cancer progression the oral microbial diversity exhibits an inverse pattern to that of the va**nal microbiome

😛Increased risk of BV in same s*x relationships (assuredly from a range of behaviours including oral s*x)

Clinically, I often see oral s*x trigger bacterial symptoms.

The "why" at this stage is not clear-cut. For many people, oral s*x is both receptive and giving and involves penetrative s*x, kissing, and other microbiome interactions.
Ensuring everyone's dental and oral health is optimised can support. Many of the optimising factors for oral health also change va**nal health, e.g., limit smoking, alcohol consumption, and exposure to stress.
