Sunglass sales are an important part of any optometric business that often get overlooked.
This is the statement I make to my customers. They usually say "we sell sunglasses, or we can't sell sunglasses for some reason".
There are many factors that influence whether Sunglass sales are a strong part of your business. The opportunities are there for the taking, if you make a few small changes.
Consider exploring the following:
* Is your sunglasses range visually accessible? Some practices have the Sunglases away from the spectacle frame display. The dispensing process can leave patients preoccupied thinking about other things and if not on their mind they can be overlooked.
* Moving on from the last point, you may benefit from shifting your thinking when dispensing to make sure you advise patients that if purchasing clear or transitions Dist or Progressive lenses, that there is a tinted or tinted polarised option for sunglasses too. From there you can ask to check their old Sunglasses and advise if the prescription is up to date. Believe it or not but some new wearers are not aware of what is possible in the prescription sunglasses eyewear arena. So delve deeper, ask those life questions, suggest/present tailored solutions. What do you do for work, do you play sports etc. Patients will appreciate the care and non churn and burn approach.
* Consider increasing your sunglass holdings. The perception of more choice or a broad enough range creates the peace of mind they will be able to find a good option.
* Pricing. Don't assume, offer the best options to your patients. Consider a 2nd pair discount offer to persuade anyone sitting on the fence.
* Remember this if a distance correction (full time) of any variety is needed then patients are going to need a sunglass. If you don't offer or at least talk to them about sunnies, your patients will get them from somewhere else.
* Finally, work with your supply partners and get the best resources, training and knowledge base you can to enable you to become a professional in the sun eyewear arena knowing all options.
These few simple ideas are the beginning to increasing patient satisfaction, revenue and sunglass sales.

I can honestly say I deal with some of the most amazing customers.
Today I saw a customer I hadn't seen for a few years as she took a sabbatical and I had changed companies and its just so incredibly pleasant to deal with this thoughtful genuine person.
I had another call that made me laugh, this customer is the nicest, dedicated, highly competent and extremely happy dispenser and I commented that's way to cheery for me jokingly after he answered the phone and we had some banter back and forth.
As much as sales reps need to generate sales, the personal connections and friendships made are what makes this job and industry truly amazing.
