50 YEARS OF HEARTACHE
Today, we stand together for a free and united Cyprus.
As we solemnly reflect on the tragic events that unfolded during the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974, the wounds inflicted upon countless Greeks and Cypriots as a result of this invasion remain fresh in our hearts. We stand united to remember the pain and sorrow endured. We pledge to honor the memory of those who perished and to support those who survived, for their resilience in the face of adversity is a testament to the strength of the human spirit.
On Sunday, 21 June, at 2 pm, our community will gather at Federation Square to commemorate this tragic anniversary.

Puskás and the South Melbourne Hellas
Ferenc Puskás was THE player of the 50s, an icon of world football. He was the star of Real Madrid and the Hungarian national team. How did a FIFA team of the century superstar become the coach of a football South Melbourne Hellas in the early 90s?
But this is more than a football story. It’s a story about immigration, multiculturalism, and the parallel universe that was Australia’s NSL, invisible to sports fans from an Anglo background, but vital to European Australians and their children

It is with heavy hearts and deep sorrow that we hear of the passing of Peter Jasonides.
A friend, community leader, and enthusiastic member of the GCM, Peter made an impression on everyone who met him. He was a proud Hellene who inspired many around him, actively supporting causes that were important to him and the wider community. Peter was one of the earliest supporters of the Greek Centre project, taking up early residence as its biggest tenant with his ITHEA RTO.
Our thoughts are with his family.

With the heaviest heart, the Greek Community of Melbourne farewells one of the most beloved members of our community, our dearest colleague and friend, Alexandro Giannadaki, who passed away unexpectedly.
Alexandros was born in Crete. He graduated with honors in Ancient, modern Greek language and pedagogics from the University of Crete. He worked for many years as a philologist in Greece and came to Melbourne in 2004 as a seconded teacher in order to contribute with his work to the enhancement of Greek language skills in the expatriate community.
In 2012 he worked as a lecturer at Monash University and since 2013 he has continued his educational work as an associate of the GCM, in the role of teacher and coordinator of the ancient Greek and adult programmes. Deeply knowledgeable in Greek language and history, for 19 years he worked tirelessly, with dedication and passion, serving his great love, language and culture. An excellent collaborator and teacher, he was distinguished for his ethos, his kindness and respect towards colleagues and students, his good humour and the quality of work.
Farewell, Alexandre, our sincere condolences to your family ... You leave behind a legacy of great work and an unfulfilled void.
We thank you for all you have generously given us over the years. You will always be in our hearts and memories.Alexander's funeral will be held in Greece according to his and family's wishes.

Calling all members!
We’re excited to invite you to our first session on the 5th of June, 6:30pm at the Greek Community Centre.
This session will be formally run by our Head of Creative Space in collaboration with our other HOD’s and committee leaders.
One of our Society’s primary goals is to create beautiful Greek-Australian films based on our foundational values. So, this is a fantastic opportunity to get creative, share your ideas, and collaborate with fellow members.
We’re asking GAFS members to bring in a logline and a paragraph pitch for a short film idea. Your ideas should be based on a prompt inspired by our core principles: agapi, philotimo, leventia, elpis, and more.
Here are some example prompts to get you started:
1. Agapi (Love): A story about an unexpected friendship that blossoms during a difficult time.
2. Philotimo (Honor): A tale of a young person standing up for what is right in their community.
3. Leventia (Bravery): An account of someone overcoming their fears to achieve a personal goal.
4. Elpis (Hope): A narrative about finding hope in the most unlikely of places.
5. Philoxenia (Hospitality): A heartwarming story of a family who opens their home to a stranger in need.
6. Sofia (Wisdom): A reflective piece on the lessons learned from an elderly relative.
7. Oikogeneia (Family): A comedic tale about a family reunion gone awry.
8. Pisti (Faith): A spiritual journey of rediscovery and faith.
9. Koinonia (Community): A story about a community coming together to save a beloved local landmark.
Whether you’re a seasoned writer or just starting out, your unique perspective is valuable, and we can’t wait to see what you come up with.
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Looking forward to seeing you there and hearing your amazing ideas.

The story behind ‘Into the Moonlit Village’ is captivating.
Poet Poli Tataraki, born in Crete but raised in Australia, first encountered Michael Winters’ artwork at an exhibition 14 years ago. Drawn by his depictions of Greece, she travelled from Dubbo to attend the event. It was a “serendipitous moment,” says Poli, that sparked a connection that would later blossom into a powerful collaboration – a bilingual exploration into the Battle of Crete, connecting World War II with Minoan history through poetry and art.
