Another stunning shot of my entry into this year’s Millinery Australia’s Design Award Pearl.

My entry is called Warada – an indigenous name for Waratah – which is the official floral emblem of the state of NSW, the Design Award’s host state in 2024. I have used the Dior brim shape for my entry as it’s a traditional shape in millinery that I believe works well with the elegance of the Pearl theme.
By adding the Waratahs to my entry my intention was to pay homage to the rich and natural beauty of New South Wales. Waratahs also hold significant cultural and symbolic importance to our First Nations peoples. Their striking blooms represent strength, vitality and resilience, reflecting the spirit of the Australian landscape.
The Waratah also has historical significance for many Australians as it featured in many arts and crafts produced in the late 1800s as a protest against mass produced goods, so it couldn’t be more fitting for a millinery competition where every piece is individually hand crafted meticulously with much care and detail.

Each year Millinery Australia hosts their annual Design Award competition with the theme this year being Pearl, in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Millinery Australia.
Millinery Australia’s Design Award showcases the artistry of Australia’s finest milliners.
It is my favourite millinery competition, and I am especially proud to be involved this year as President of Millinery Australia during our special 30th year celebration.

Melbourne Hat Walk

Hat Walk Melbourne is Sunday 7th April at 11am kicking off at Federation Square.
If you are a hat lover, a FOTF lover, a cowboy(girl) a showgirl(boy), a cosplayer … whoever you are as long as you love to wear a hat this is the event for you!
Starting at Federation Square at 11am and finishing at the State Library, a meandering walk with lots of photos opportunities.

I took a break from millinery for most of December and all of January as I enjoyed the school holidays but I have been back in my studio for a few weeks now working on some ready to wear and and I am kicking off the year with this beautiful custom piece which is heading off to her new Mumma today!
Made for a very special client using some of my most precious vintage straw. A gorgeous piece for a gorgeous client!

I am honoured to have been elected President of the Millinery Association of Australia at last night’s AGM.
It is a position I held previously in 2019/20 and I must say I’m very excited to work with the newly formed committee and look forward to the millinery year ahead 🎩❤️💫

A highlight of being an MAA member is having Richard Shaw trackside on Cup Day at Flemington to take pics of our members entries into the Lillian Frank Millinery Award.

The sweet vintage French petals on this headpiece are original vintage 1950’s, such a rare find.
I have blocked them over a solid straw base and then added the hand made feather flowers to add even more texture and height to this beautiful piece.
This piece is classic, stylish, versatile, an amazing sweet silhouette that would suit all face shapes.

Here I have blocked this beautiful vintage turban block using a bright pink straw, with a netting overlay sprinkled with sequins and finished with the most amazing oversized pink and red feather flower.
An absolute knock out!

This amazing vintage saucer block came my way late last year which I instantly fell in love with and now that I’ve blocked it I’m even more in love with it!
I’ve used a black straw which really shows off the shape of the block and added an oversized feature of distressed double sided crinoline flower. This is so lightweight and easy to wear, looks great from every angle and is a big impact piece.

Hot pink top hat, with fuchsia netting, absolutely blossoming with the most beautiful mixed floral display in mixed pinks, mauves and red.

Watermelon pink oversized gum nuts.
This piece is mesmerising and certainly is guaranteed to have you standing out in the fashion crowd.
I’ve used crinoline to sculpture these oversized flowers and have placed them sitting their equally oversized green gum nut pods.
She is surprisingly light weight and very easy to wear.

I’m madly in loves with this Dior hat - more a piece of head art than a headpiece - she is blocked on a hot pink base that is absolutely covered in a sweet bloom of blossoming pale pink, hot pink and red flowers.
She’s a knock out, a classic and classy piece that’s sure to have all heads turning in your direction!
