‘Home Again’ By Frederick McCubbin 1884, Beautifully Framed Print - $375

Frederick McCubbin painted this work while a student of George Folingsby at the National Gallery School, Melbourne. It shows the influence of Folingsby’s teaching in its domestic genre, dramatic storyline, carefully controlled lighting and a grey-brown palette enlivened with red and purple. McCubbin has given this mid-Victorian narrative a strong Australian flavour with a bearded swagman, bedroll on his shoulder, returning home.

Frederick McCubbin was one of the founding members of the Heidelberg School, which is an art movement related to Australian Impressionism. He became famous for his depictions of pioneer life that captured the challenges and aspirations of living in the Australian bush. Some of his most popular masterpieces include Down on his luck (1889), On the Wallaby Track (1896), and The pioneer (1904).

The Drover’ By Walter Withers, Beautifully Framed Print- $375

The local Eltham butcher, Mr Capewell, posed with his horse and dog, in Eltham for this work. Withers’ wife described the painting as realistic, depicting an incident in the life of the fast disappearing drover: ‘The sheep are being driven through a ‘difficult passage’ in the heart of the Bush. The time is noon, on a hot Summer’s day, the dust rising from the ground and almost obscuring the wagon. The drover himself is mounted on an old horse, and has just signalled his dog to cease driving the sheep which are crowding into the narrow space left between the heavily timbered trees.’

Walter Withers was born in 1854 in Warwickshire, England. He died in 1914 in Eltham, Victoria, Australia. Walter Withers was a member of the Heidelberg School, a group of artists working in groups en plein air (outdoors) in Sydney and Melbourne. The most noted members of the group were Tom Roberts, Frederick McCubbin and Charles Conder.

Combining Australian nationalism with impressionist painting techniques, the Heidelberg School artists sought to explore Australian life, the bush, Australia’s unique light, and to tell classic stories of Australian folklore. Their works are considered to be the first to realistically and sensitively depict the Australian landscape.

A very unique and multi dimensional black and gold framed print of a dreamcatcher. Dreamcatchers originated with the Ojibwes but became widespread within the Native American communities in the 1960s and 1970s as a result of the Pan-Indian Movement. In great condition

Victorian Piano Stool Mahogany With Button Upholstery and Ball And Claw Feet - $275

It is historically believed the design of the ball-and-claw originated in China. The claw represented by a dragon clutching a sacred jewel. According to Chinese mythology, the dragon (emperor) is guarding the jewel (the symbol of wisdom or purity) from wicked sources trying to steal it. This motif was also adopted by Japan.

In the course of the 18th century, as European trade with Asia expanded greatly, so did the import of many Chinese and Japanese goods, such as porcelain and bronzes, displaying the ball and claw. The taste for the exotic was prevalent in the fine and decorative arts, and it was not long until the ball and claw foot appeared in English furniture.

Please note, the up and down mechanism of the stool needs attention. Otherwise in great condition.
