ButohOUT! 2024 Originally called Dance of Darkness, Butoh has always been associated with the marginalised, embracing the abnormal, odd, quirky and the deviant.
The 5th iteration of ButohOUT!, a collection of events inspired by the dance theatre artform of Butoh, explores the artistic theme 'New Ab/Normal' during the post-pandemic era with the question: what is normal? Led by artistic director Yumi Umiumare and the producer Takashi Takiguchi, it offers 5 public workshops including one for children and seniors, a performance-making laboratory, a forum and

Congratulations to the ButohOUT! Creative/design team – Jacquie, Emma and Yumi, and all ButohOUT! Ensemble aka amazing Melbourne-artists who filled the industrial school convent with amazing ideas, props, sets and consumes wherever they came from – the shed, second-hand shops, street strips or bins!
It is that where the creative power creates something odd, twisted and non-conforming to anything alike. Hope ButohOUT! continues to be a testing and inclusive art pot for anyone who dear to do what your sprit desires to do!
Hope to see you very soon.

All ButohOUT!, OUT of order sessions sold OUT! and here review is OUT! - Review #2 by the Age
"There is always movement and noise on the periphery, and everything seems to want to happen all at once. It’s true that the second half of Out of Order is, relatively speaking, less chaotic and demands less of the audience. But the centre never holds for long in this anarchic comedy of malfunction, this roll-up of haphazardly costumed odd bods."

"ButohBAR playfully and artfully explores disorder, disruption, disarray without descending into chaos or nihilism. The performance space is extremely apt and captures the sense of decay, decline and neglect that encompasses the overall design of the show. "

HELLO EVERYONE!
FINALLY WE ARE ANNOUNCING BUTOHOUT! 2023
---------------------------------------
ButohBAR 番狂わせ OUT of ORDER
---------------------------------------
ButohOUT! 2023 presents a new experiment in the form of a bizarre nightclub, known as the ButohBAR, featuring dance, cabaret, song, poetry and visual arts woven together by Butoh – originally called the Dance of Darkness.
Reviving the 70’s/80’s era where Butoh thrived in nightclubs and strip joints, ButohBAR - OUT of ORDER summons the raw spirit of those times, embracing the metaphor of a human world out of order to provoke reflection on our own post-pandemic existence.
Prior to the performance season from 16-19 November 2023, there are 4 workshops available for you to experience the world of Butoh with the renowned Butoh dancer, choreographer and director, Yumi Umiumare, together with the masterful Australian artists, Willow Conway, Matthew Crosby, Jacquie Stockdale, Emma Bathgate and Maude Davey (OAM) as well as the international guest artist Hal Tanaka.

Depending on the weather, we will go and visit many visible and invisible Peek-A-Boos around the Convent while feeling the wind, listening to the grounds, smelling the sound!

Let's get our CHAOS blessed!
🥰🥹😎
Butoh body still needs body co-ordination.
But it is not all about the organisation of body either.
Organs in our body coordinate our body, blood, nerves and muscles without us coordinating them.
Butoh will teach us something un-teachable and shed awareness on those un-attainable body movements.
Look at us, so many un-repeatable and rich movements within form/choreography.

Our Story
ButohOUT! Festival2020 - Primal Color
www.butohout.com
ButohOUT! is an annual festival activating local diverse communities in Victoria through the profound Japanese performance art medium of Butoh. Following 3 critically acclaimed years, ButohOUT! 2020 offers 5 workshops and 2 performance seasons exploring the artistic theme, ‘Primal Colour’. This year the program is presented in partnership with Abbotsford Convent Foundation and Dancehouse.
The 5 specialised workshops include 3 explorations with acclaimed Japanese Australian Butoh dancer, choreographer and a creator of Butoh Cabaret, Yumi Umiumare; a weekend intensive with internationally renowned Japanese German Butoh practitioner, and the popular family workshop, Peek-A-Butoh, co-presented with Convent Kids program. All workshops will be held at the stunning location of Abbotsford Convent.
ButohOUT! 2020 will explore diverse interpretations of Butoh which originally emerged as Dance of Darkness in Japan during the late 1950’s. ButohOUT! creates platforms for participants to explore their authentic movement vocabulary. Butoh, classically presented in the colour of white (ie. white make-up), is believed to 'erase' and ‘de-identify’ the performers excessive and artificial layers. Through stripping back layers of conditioning, the participants will explore the essence and source of emotion through colour utilising metaphorical expressions.
