Patchwork Passion
Patchwork Passion is your one-stop shop for all things patchwork and quilting. Great prices too. We aim to keep our products affordable and readily available.
A passion for fabric and colour was the beginning of 'Patchwork Passion' as a mail order business some years ago. We have now expanded and have opened a shop so you can easily browse our huge range of fabrics, books, patterns, kits, notions, BOM, plus many more items. Our policy is to make every visit to Patchwork Passion an enjoyable experience. If you can’t find what you are looking for, please ask us and we will endeavour to find it for you.
DID YOU KNOW? The origins of patchwork and quilting are ancient, but they didn't necessarily start at the same time. Patchwork, the technique of sewing pieces of fabric together, is believed to have been practiced by various cultures thousands of years ago. Examples of patchwork have been found in ancient Egypt, China, and in early European history.
Quilting, the process of stitching together layers of fabric (often including a batting for warmth), also has ancient roots. The oldest known quilted garment dates to around 3400 BCE, found on a carved ivory figure from the First Dynasty of Egypt. However, quilting as we think of it today, in conjunction with patchwork, seems to have developed later.
In Europe, patchwork and quilting as a combined technique are most prominently documented from around the 14th or 15th centuries. Initially, patchwork may have been a thrifty way to use scraps of fabric, while quilting was used to create warmth and padding. By the 17th and 18th centuries, the two techniques had merged more significantly, with quilted patchwork bed coverings becoming more common, particularly in Europe and later in North America.
So, while both techniques have long histories, it was several centuries after patchwork first appeared that quilting the patchwork into layered bed coverings (what we think of as a quilt today) became widespread.
