Check out the RAMAC's disk storage unit, the IBM 350! It was massive, weighing over a ton and requiring forklifts for movement. Even large cargo airplanes were needed for delivery! This beast stored around 5MB of data on fifty 24-inch-diameter disks. With two access arms under servo control, it could effortlessly select disks and recording tracks. However, it took an average of 600ms to find a single record, compared to today's modern hard disk drives with seek times of 5-10ms. IBM was proud to claim that this monster could store as much data as 64,000 punched cards. Mind-blowing! 😲 😲

The Xerox PARC's Alto personal computer, developed in 1973, was the first computer to feature a graphical user interface (GUI) and the desktop metaphor. Though the Alto was not intended for sale, it became a hit among PARC and other Xerox facilities, as well as various universities. The Alto's impact on personal computer design was significant throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s. Notably, its influence can be seen in the Three Rivers PERQ, Apple Lisa and Macintosh, and the initial Sun workstations.
