Did you know that Pufferfish use their ability to inflate as a defence mechanism against potential predators?!

You can find our Long Spine Porcupine Pufferfish in the Coral Atoll exhibit next to Adventure Café.

Smush is our Giant QLD Grouper 🐟

SEA LIFE Melbourne Aquarium originally took Smush in as a rescue, but he quickly became part of the family. QLD Groupers are the largest reef dwelling bony fish in the WORLD and have been listed as a vulnerable species by the IUCN.

Smush can be found in our oceanarium and frequents our cleaning stations getting a spa treatment from the Cleaner Wrasse. 🫧

💡 Did you know....The lumps and bumps on a crocodile's back are called ‘scutes’. The scutes manipulate the water directly around a crocodile, so that they leave no ripples on the surface as they swim underneath! So sneaky.

Our Jelly Lab's team has successfully raised the White-spotted Jellyfish! 🪼

White-spotted Jellyfish are found throughout Australia, easily recognised by the large, semi-transparent, rounded bell covered in white dots.

Whilst these little jellies aren't on display to the public yet, you can catch an EXCLUSIVE look in our Behind-the-Scenes Jelly Lab Experience!

Meet Ryobi, our largetooth sawfish! (Pristis pristis).

Sawfish, also known as carpenter sharks, are a family of rays characterised by a long, narrow, flattened nose extension, lined with sharp transverse teeth, arranged in a way that resembles a saw. 🪚 They are among the largest fish, with some species reaching lengths of about 7–7.6 m.

🌏 Geography lessons 🌏

Our penguin keepers provide environmental and sensory enrichment for the penguins to investigate. Last week the penguins had a globe to explore, whilst the penguins don't understand what a globe is, it does have some fun shapes and colours for them to experience!

We are thrilled to announce our weedy sea dragons have just turned 1, a major milestone in SEA LIFE Melbourne’s breeding program.

These animals embody Australia's remarkable wildlife, and with each success, we move closer to conserving and safeguarding these vulnerable species from escalating threats in their natural habitats. Weedy sea dragons are notoriously challenging to breed in care, with only a handful of aquariums across the world managing this feat, so we are overjoyed to be celebrating such a special birthday. This milestone showcases our ongoing program efforts and instils hope for the future of these majestic creatures. 🌏
