Exciting News! The Australian Government has announced a significant expansion of the marine park surrounding the pristine Heard and McDonald Islands.

Located in the Southern Ocean, approximately 4,000 kilometres southwest of mainland Australia and 1,700 kilometres north of Antarctica, these subantarctic islands are set to see their marine park expand dramatically. The federal government plans to add an additional 300,000 square kilometres to the current protected area, quadrupling its size.

This expansion aims to provide a sanctuary for diverse marine life including penguins, seals, whales, and albatrosses. It will also safeguard crucial breeding and feeding grounds for a variety of sea and bird species.

ABC news has written a great article about this, which this post is sourced from, if you would like to learn more! linked below

Toby our Golden Brushtail Possum, having a snack. Golden possums are an unusual variety of the common brushtail possum, getting their golden coats from a genetic mutation that results in low levels of melanin in their skin and fur. This is the same pigment that gives humans our skin and hair colour!

New Discovery Alert! Researchers have used AI to analyse 469 wild African elephant calls to spot subtle differences between the rumbles. They found "individual vocal labels" that elephants on the receiving end recognised and later responded to when the calls were played back to them, wrote the team in the journal Nature Ecology and Evolution.

This study is a great demonstration on how machine learning tools are being applied in the field, assisting scientists in making new discoveries that we’re previously not possible

Every year millions of our native wildlife are impacted by plastic pollution.

Reptile Encounters is joining participants around the globe in taking a small step by pledging to refuse either single-use cups, plastic drink bottles or plastic food wrap this July.

Small Changes Matter! Together we can make a difference and stop billions of single-use plastic items ending up in landfill or litter each year.

Visit the Plastic Free July website to make your plastic pledge! www.plasticfreejuly.org
