Who was Siva Singh? Uncovering the early Sikh settler who fought the White Australia policy The little-known story of a Punjabi Sikh migrant who stood up to the racist White Australia policy in the early 1900s is the inspiration for an ambitious exhibition, Bush Diwan, that’s set to tour the country. The first stop is Benalla Art Gallery in regional Victoria.
‘Aussie Phulkari’ commissioned by in collaboration with
This is the biggest artwork I have made in perforated steel. The steel was roughly 2.5m x 1.2m (referencing traditionally length of a Phulkari which usually was 2.5m x 1.5m). The metal was then folded to reference draped fabric of phulkari. The colours used in the work are inspired by Australian wattle tree and Indian canola fields.
This work can be viewed at Benalla Art Gallery.

Here is a glimpse of the new work ‘Aussie Phulkari’ commissioned by in collaboration with
This is the biggest artwork I have made in perforated steel. The steel was roughly 2.5m x 1.2m (referencing traditionally length of a Phulkari which usually was 2.5m x 1.5m). The metal was then folded to reference draped fabric of a Chuni, shawl or a Phulkari. The head covering whether it was Chuni or Phulkari is of great significance to women. I am very excited to be part of Bush Diwan exhibition by 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art and Benalla Art Gallery. Curators Amrit Gill and Reina Takeuchi have brought together six artists in this exhibition at Benalla.
The exhibition is Inspired by the story of Benalla local Siva Singh, Bush Diwan asks us to consider the question: in migrating, what do we bring with us and what do we leave behind? It celebrates life of Siva Singh and other Punjabi pioneers who lived in the region. Siva Singh was initially a Hawker in the region and later brought his own farm where the very first known Akhandpath was performed.
Siva Singh was struck off the electoral roll after the White Australia Policy, even though he had voted three times previously. He took this matter to High Court of Australia. While the the court case was initially dismissed he regained his right to vote in 1925 after a decade long legal battle.
In this exhibition I am showing a new commissioned Phulkari work. The work explores familial traditions, stories, objects and ideas to connect migrant lives in Australia to homeland.
The exhibition starts today 4th August and finishes 16th October. Official opening ceremony is on 26th of August.
I invite you all to come to Benalla on 26th August and join us in celebrating the opening of this exhibition
