Piinpi: Contemporary Indigenous Fashion opens today at Bunjilaka Aboriginal Cultural Centre. Bringing together a selection of designers, artists and makers – this stunning exhibition showcases Indigenous Australian fashion, a blossoming design movement gaining international acclaim. Piinpi derives its name from the expression used by Kanichi Thampanyu people, representing the ever-evolving landscape across time and space in the East Cape York Peninsula. Featuring the works of 36 Indigenous artists and designers spanning urban hubs to remote desert art centres, Piinpi celebrates the resilience and diversity of the rapidly expanding Indigenous fashion and textile industry. Struggling with their sense of self and identity, the film depicts a young child in a gloomy suburb who escapes their reflection by stomping on puddles. Eventually, they build the courage to peer into the water and confront their image.
