Whether you skip them, kick them, or stack them to create a cairn, rocks can be found in all sorts of places, even from outer space! 🌑

On Earth, we have just under 800 kilograms of moon rock which helps us understand the Moon’s formation and we happen to have a piece of it. What you see here is a small portion cut from a larger rock dubbed ‘The Great Scott’, after it was collected by Commander David Scott during the Apollo 15 Lunar Mission in July 1971.

After amassing so many samples, NASA distributed the collected moon rocks to researchers around the world for study, including Museum Victoria Honorary Associate Professor John Lovering.

Just some space-themed trivia for you on what is the anniversary of the moon landing! ✨

Biik Milboo Dhumba | Country Is Always Talking 11/07/2024

Visit Biik Milboo Dhumba | Country Is Always Talking this NAIDOC week to gain a deeper understanding of the meaning of Country and the ways it connects to language and culture. 🍃

It invites all Australians to listen, learn, and engage in meaningful dialogue, fostering a society where the wisdom and contributions of First Peoples are fully valued and respected.

For the First Peoples of this continent, Country is more than place. It describes a deep connection to land, water and sky, to animals and plants, to Ancestors and to the wisdom of the land itself. Throughout the forest gallery, you will encounter opportunities to listen as Kulin Nations Community and Elders share stories about their unique and personal connection to Country.

📅 Open every day at Melbourne Museum.
🎫 Free for First Peoples community members.

For thousands of years, First Peoples have thought ethically and consciously about sustainability and waste, and only now is the rest of the world catching up.

The Deadly kween jumpsuit (2019) by Bardi designer Teagan Cowlishaw is one of the 24 hand-crafted garments presented in the exhibition Piinpi: Contemporary Indigenous Fashion. It combines the remnants from a black and gold sequin cushion and faulty Deadly t-shirt with organic silk, and aqua metallic gold lustre print on PET (recycled plastic bottles).

This garment represents the embodiment of black empowerment through fashion and the ethical consciousness of fashion label AARLI whose designers both honour and respect the environment and their Indigenous cultural heritage.
