I have jotted some key points down for the businesses who might or could be affected during this flood disaster.
1. Photograph equipment or assets to show pre-event condition for your insurance claims.
2. Backup your data and store off-site or use cloud storage.
3. Save digital copies of key business documents, for example:
insurance
business registration
property deeds
key contracts
licences
certificates
awards.
4. Assess your finances, including how long you can operate with reduced or no revenue (this might help with claiming some flood grants which could be available in future).
5. Before you replace destroyed equipment, stock, please ensure you record this in your ledger and claim this as stock loss through your business tax returns.
6. Contact your insurance if you aren't sure if you are covered for floods. They might be able to claim it under business interruption or income protection insurance.
7. Contact your landlord and insurer before cleaning up – they may fund clean-up and require authorisation before repairs begin.
8. Contact the Australian Financial Complaints Authority on 1800 931 678 if you can't reach agreement with your insurer.

We know the mumbo jumbo and technical terms we sometimes use can be a little overwhelming so we have compiled a list of some common terms you will hear in the accounts and/or finance world that are really handy to wrap your head around:
Cost of goods sold (COGS): An expense that represents how much it costs you to produce your offerings. COGS is a crucial factor when determining your business’s profit.
Inventory: Includes the raw materials in storage, items in the production process, and finished goods available for sale.
Assets: Your business’s physical (tangible) or non-physical (intangible) property that adds value to your business. You can have current assets which can convert into cash within one year. And, you can have fixed assets that don’t convert quickly into cash.
Liabilities: Money that your business owes. You can have both short-term liabilities that are due within one year and long-term liabilities that are not due within one year.
Equity: Your business value after subtracting liabilities from assets.
Revenue: The amount of money your business brings in from sales.

Do I really need to keep record of my receipts?
Not only does it make our lives easier but keeping good records can also reduce the cost of managing your tax affairs. If you use a tax advisor, you can reduce the time they spend sorting and preparing your records. This will give them more time to ensure you claim your entitlements.
Other reasons for keeping track of your records can be the following:

📎 Reduce the risk of tax audits and adjustments
📎 Improve communication with your accountant / financial advisor
📎 Help resolve issues that relate to a dispute of your assessments or adjustments
