As I love to read about the history of textiles, especially domestic textiles, I’m just a wee bit excited to finally receive the SEWING ROLLS, NEEDLE ROLLS AND HUSWIFS by Dawn Cook Ronningen 🪡🧵

This visual feast of the authors collection includes examples of sewing, needle rolls and huswifs (small handmade textile sewing kits) from 1780 - 1900.

The pages are filled with history, high resolution photography and detailed descriptions. This is not a pattern book but it is an amazing resource book full of inspiration with examples of a variety of materials, techniques from rare 18th century embroidery to unusual one-of-a-kind textile sewing items.

Tanabata, the Star Festival (七夕 大竹彩奈), 2018, by Ōtake Ayana (大竹彩奈, born 1981), a contemporary Japanese Nihonga (日本画) painter from Saitama Prefecture (埼玉県).

Tanabata (七夕, meaning "Evening of the seventh"), also known as the Star Festival (星祭り), is a Japanese festival originating from the Chinese Qixi Festival. It celebrates the meeting of the deities Orihime and Hikoboshi (represented by the stars Vega and Altair respectively). According to legend, the Milky Way separates these lovers, and they are allowed to meet only once a year on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the lunisolar calendar. The date of Tanabata varies from region region, but the first festivities begin on 7 July of the Gregorian calendar. The celebration is held on various days between July and August.

I will always treasure my memories of our visit to Miyama and the knowledge that Shindo san shared with us ……… a great loss to the craft of Indigo Dying 😢

💎 Last night we enjoyed a fabulous FABRIC GEMS NECKLACE workshop with …….. it was so much fun and everyone went home wearing a finished necklace made from fabric, beads, buttons and thread and a BIG smile 😁

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT……….Small things can sometimes trigger BIG memories ……. I only just noticed this saying on the selvedge as I was cutting the fabric and it was a favourite saying of my mum’s who never threw anything out 🥰

Like many of her generation growing up in a world between and during World Wars, of rations and making do with what ever was available, she always detested waste of any sort. As children, my brother and I could never quite understand why she made such a fuss, from saving used Christmas and Birthday paper wrapping to be re-used to tearing up old sheets to use as hankies (and keeping the real hankies for special occasions) or for toiles for her dressmaking or even lining sometimes for garments…… special memories 💜

Yesterday I made a visit to the to see the ATAA Exhibition which is on until June 2nd …….. amazing, diverse, inspirational are just a few words to describe this exhibition …….it was hard to chose which one to vote for 🤩

It was a treat to see the finished coat that started in our Garment Making class 😍
