Link in profile 🎶 🔈

Participants in these workshops will be introduced to the expansive possibilities of sound through creative and conceptual strategies for sound-making and composition. With Nina’s insights and guidance, participants will be introduced to the emotional and experiential capacities of sound, while developing practical technical skills using audio tools and equipment.

These workshops will develop skills and open pathways to sound designing for performance, videos, podcasts, sound sculpture, installations, and more. No prior experience with sound required.

13/07/2024

has now made the George Paton Gallery audio visual collection available for research access. Find out more about their digitisation project by checking out the link in profile.

“…it became increasingly clear that the AV portion of the George Paton Gallery archives involves a rare collection of records, from experimental sound recording to lectures given at the gallery, to documentation of performance art and events. This collection holds a particularly significant glimpse into the “alternative” kind of art which was emerging during the early days of the Gallery. Being one of the first Australian venues to support and show “alternative” art, the George Paton Gallery was an important space for installation art, mixed media works, experimental film and video works, performance art, and “women’s” art. By supporting and regularly showing experimental work which fell outside the scope of many institutions at the time, the Paton Gallery fostered a valuable space for contemporary art and artists.”

COMING SOON: we are excited to welcome our 2024 Artist In Residence, Kayley Martinez, to the gallery next week!

Martinez is fascinated by the idea of light as a material; how it can be warped, reflected, and stretched into a spectrum of colours. Martinez explore the unique ability of light to rekindle the awe, wonder, and curiosity.

Kayley will take over the gallery during June and work towards an exhibition during July this year.

The Living Room is a manifesto on dreaming speculative narratives and rituals through cultural memory and (re)imagination. Our cultural ecologies are a mashup, a web of richly entangled and interdependent unfolding stories. Through embodied objects, projections, and illustrations, you are invited to meditate on what it is to be human in a post-human time.⁣

OPENING TONIGHT 5-7pm:

(𝘥𝘦)𝘤𝘰𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴
by rochelle morris

(de)compositions by rochelle morris consists of ephemeral ecological assemblages that convey interconnectivity. I create paintings, sculptures and drawings with plant matter that entangles with non-human and human matter. Matter that is compostable and matter that reveals my contamination with capitalist, colonial systems. The plant matter within the artworks: pollinate, eat away at, gestate, inform, decompose and intra-act with their surroundings.

𝘓𝘢𝘵𝘦 𝘠𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸
Featuring Keira Davis, Mia Quinn, Mary Shaw and Jack Snow-Viener

This show is about the unstable ground between idea and articulation. ‘Colour’ is an articulation of a silent phenomenon. To label a colour ‘yellow’ is to deal in prior knowledge, hoping that understanding will percolate through this inadequate language. Cool yellow, warm yellow, heavy yellow, tender yellow - it's sinking teeth into a meatless carcass.

Visit the Arts Lab, next door to the GPG, this Thursday and Friday 1-5pm to view “18:10 + four.fiveXsix” by sibling duo Felix and Sophie Adsett.

“18:10 + four.fiveXsix” is a video installation that explores the intimate connection between the body, space, and viewer.

The artist-duo explore these themes through a repetitive process defined by spatial, performative, and narrative structures. They use repetition as a tool to challenge the intuitive response of both the performer and viewer.

Implicit in this is the investigation of the person’s connection to their spatial, aural, and visual surrounds, that are translated to the experience of the audience, thereby blurring the binary between viewer/performer, filmic space/viewer space.

Presented as part of the inaugural Arts & Culture Film Festival. Curated by Arabella Frahn-Starkie. Presented in partnership with and
