STREAT
We are a hospitality social enterprise dedicated to helping young people and the planet.
Did you know that 1.8 billion cups go to waste every YEAR in Australia? Let that sink in. That’s about the equivalent of 203 trams worth of disposable cups every year.
☕️Not only that but on average a takeaway cup drinker who buys 4 coffees a week, will contribute 160 disposbale cups to landfill in just one year and if it’s every day, 336 cups. If you and your friends all collectively decided to make that change it would save thousands of disposbale cups from going to waste. Sometimes it feels like your contribution doesn’t make a difference but it really does and you should feel empowered to make that change!
🗑️Another fun fact - only 5% of cups are actually recycled. The disposable cups that claim to be ‘recyclable’ or ‘composatable’, generally never actually end up being recycled. If you can a keep cup is the only way to go - or dine in and smell the roses for 5 minutes over your morning cup.
Join us this SIPTEMBER in fighting waste!
We visited our new STREAT / Forward Pocket cafe today and met some reusable cup champions!
Zara has been using the same reusable cup since 2019 and never gone back. Zara was originally drawn to how cute they look, but once learning about the significant waste created by disposable cups loves doing her bit to support the environment. On the plus side Zara noted “coffee actually tastes better in a Keep Cup..” and stays hot!
The second image is of Michael and Kate, who work together down the road on Lennox St. They are fierce STREAT/ Forward Pocket locals and love bringing their own mugs to the cafe. Michael has been taking a mug to work for years which inspired Kate to start bringing her own mug. Kate is proud to say, “I love having my own cosy cup and having a handle to hold it”. Michael and Kate are passionate about reducing their waste and what a fun and easy way to be sustainable with your colleagues.
The last photo is the cafe manager, Gemma; Gemma loves her Richmond community and thinks most people are dedicated to being sustainable. She is actively encouraging customers to support her cafe to reaching their 25% goal.
Good luck STREAT / Forward Pocket

Our Fast Track To Work Program 37 has begun! We are thrilled to announce 11 new young people are currently in our program.
Fast Track To Work is a fully supported 8-week program for young people facing barriers to employment who are seeking work in hospitality (cafes, restaurants, kitchens) or in horticulture (gardening, urban farming, landscaping, indoor plants). This program includes workplace experience, fun and interactive work readiness workshops, social activities and individual case support.
This is the whole reason why we exist, by providing programs and pathways for young people to thrive.
🗑️🍎Did you know that the average Victorian household throws out approximately $2,200 worth of food each year? Some households have compost or green bins that can take food waste, but many don’t, which means this food waste goes to landfill, where it breaks down in a way that creates harmful greenhouse gases.
In this hands-on, 45-minute workshop, you’ll make quick pickles using in-season vegetables from the Queen Vic market, or bring in your own excess veggies from home. You’ll take home the pickles you make, as well as the recipe. We hope you’ll use it again and again, so you’ll never throw out a sad, forgotten half of a cucumber or wilted excess stalks of celery ever again!
👋 Run by MAKE Studios in collaboration with STREAT, this workshop is part of our contribution to Moving Feast, a network of social enterprises and socially-minded businesses collaborating for a connected, fair and regenerative Victorian food system.
🏠Event details:
Saturday 10 August
11:00am, 1pm or 3pm (each workshop runs for 45 mins)
Moving Feast Kitchen at the Purpose Precinct
20-21 Shed F, Queen Victoria Market (the Peel St end of Queen Victoria Market)
✅Tickets: $20 per person.
Includes all ingredients, and you take home a jar of pickles and a recipe card.

This project is supported by the Victorian Government’s Circular Economy Business Support Fund as part of the Circular Economy Business Innovation Centre (CEBIC)

This week’s highly anticipated special brought to you by the kitchen is here: sourdough fettuccine with caponata, italian greens and three cheeses [V].
We know you may be thinking pasta made with bread??🥖🤔But our taste test confirms: ‘sourdough fettuccine’ tastes just like regular pasta!
🍞 Bread is one of the most wasted foods in Australia and this recipe includes unused bread from to mix the breadcrumbs with some new flour and eggs, to then roll it and boil as you would for any other pasta.
🍆 The caponata uses the traditional sauce as a guide to steer the flavour and texture. In true Moving Feast style, it takes advantage of the ingredients coming through the market kitchen. This caponata includes eggplant, tomatoes, red onion, garlic and long beans.
📍Only available at our Cromwell Cafe this week - come down and try it for yourself!

Welcome to the new Moving Feast Vic Kitchen product at the Purpose Precinct at Queen Victoria Market - Sweet Potato Shoyu!
Let's start with a bit of background on Shoyu. Soy sauce is shoyu. A fermented liquid condiment using roasted wheat and cooked soy beans innoculated with an Aspergillus mould. Water and salt is added and the mixture is brewed which creates the umami flavour and deep colour.
In this process of making shoyu we are using roasted sweet potato to create the dark roasted flavours and grew the aspergillus mould culture on brown rice. Water and salt was added and brewed in the same technique as traditional Shoyu.
The result is a dark liquid condiment with umami but non-traditional notes of sweet potato sweetness. Note that this Shoyu does not contain wheat like most other Shoyus (soy sauces).
Vegan | Gluten Free
Visit our kitchen at the F shed 20/21 at Queen Victoria Market then walk up to F Shed 26/27 to purchase our products which are diverting overripe or undersold produce at the market.
