Severe weather on its way across Victoria as we head into Christmas, with thunderstorms, strong winds and heavy rain predicted. These conditions can mean a greater chance of trees falling onto powerlines, causing power outages.
Here are some tips to help you be power prepared:
- Fill an esky with ice in to keep your food and drinks cool
- Have battery operated torches and radios in a place easy to access - keep spare batteries handy too
- Charge your battery packs so they're ready to power your mobile phones.
- Make sure you can open your garage or fence manually so you can leave your home if the power goes out.
- If you have an electric water pump, stock up on bottled water
- If your power goes out, check Outage Tracker for latest restoration times: www.outagetracker.com.au
- Report faults and emergencies online www.ausnetservices.com.au/report-fault or on 13 17 99.
- If you're in immediate danger, call 000. For emergency services, call the SES on 13 25 00.
- Never enter floodwaters and assume any fallen or damaged powerlines are live

Please stay safe this Christmas and share this information with friends and family.
We’ve been taking a gander at a serious issue affecting birdlife in the Gippsland area.
A concerned Sale resident, who lives in a wetlands area popular with swans, eagles, pelicans and other large birds, reported earlier that birds were becoming injured or dying after flying into our transmission lines.
Our Field Operations team flocked out to investigate and find solutions. They installed bird diverters, reflective discs or tags attached to powerlines at certain intervals. As the sun reflects onto the discs, it draws attention to the lines and helps birds see and avoid them. You can see these bird diverters in action in the short video below.
One of our Senior Lines Engineers also began developing a birdproof overhead line design for our 66kV powerlines. This includes a pole-top arrangement to help protect swans and large birds, bird divertors on phase conductors and eco-friendly crossarm bird spikes.
The concerned resident hasn’t seen any more inured birds since the diverters were installed and has witnessed birds adjusting their flight paths to fly above the powerlines.
This is great news for our feathered friends but also for our customers in the Gippsland area. Not only are the birds being kept safe, reducing bird contact on powerlines also reduces the likelihood of outages!
Hello and heads up Avonsleigh, Clematis, Clyde North, Cranbourne North, Devon Meadows, Emerald, Kinglake, Lang Lang, Maryknoll, Menzies Creek, Officer, Templestowe, Tonimbuk and Wattle Glen.

A Total Fire Ban (TFB) day has been declared for the Northern Country tomorrow (Wednesday 13 December).
On TFB days, our bushfire mitigation technology operates on its highest setting to help protect your community. If it detects a fault, it’ll cut power to the area until we’ve patrolled the powerline and made sure it’s safe to turn the power back on.
This may increase the possibility of longer outages. Here are some tips to prepare: https://www.ausnetservices.com.au/electricity/power-prepared

Keep an eye out for our helicopters in your area from Tuesday 12th to Friday 15th December.
Trees brought down powerlines in Merriang South in November and high river flow in the Buffalo River combined with inaccessible terrain have delayed repairs. This has meant some properties have been running on generators for their electricity.
Our aerial crew are now preparing to perform a cable haul to safely pull three new cables across the Buffalo River. This involves attaching a long line to the helicopter, which in turn connects to the new cables and hauls them, one at a time, across the river into position.

Thank you Loch Sport for your patience and resilience while we worked to get your power back on yesterday.
Bushfires damaged 7 power poles on Tuesday morning causing an outage. We were able to supply power to most of the town overnight through generators, while we began restoration efforts.
A big shout out to our trusted delivery partner Downer Group for their quick and collaborative work repairing fire damaged poles in challenging conditions and getting the power flowing to Loch Sport again.
Hi again Loch Sport
Our crews were able to safely access the area with the help of local emergency services. Severe weather and fires damaged 7 power poles in Loch Sport this morning, which caused a power outage to around 1900 properties. Please stay safe as the fires are still in progress.
Generators will supply power to most of the town from 10pm tonight until we repair the damaged power poles and reconnect the town back to the network.
We're communicating with residents throughout the restoration process. If you're impacted by the outage but haven't received a SMS from us, make sure your electricity retailer (the company you pay your power bills to) has your correct mobile number. They'll pass it onto us and we can start sending you updates.
Please stay safe and share this with family and friends in the area. Stay away from fallen or damaged powerlines and assume any wires are live.

Great news! GPG Australia's Ryan Corner and Hawkesdale Windfarm is now connected to our transmission network, after successful energisation of the 500/132 kV RCHD Transformer at Tarrone Terminal Station.
Once complete, the Windfarm will provide enough clean energy to power 141,000 homes. The project has created over 300 local construction jobs in south-west Victoria since August 2022.
We’re proud to support the delivery of more clean energy to the grid with our project partners GPG Australia and Consolidated Power Projects Australia, as we strive towards our net-zero goals.

Hi Mallacoota 👋
Our crews have been working hard to complete upgrades to Mallacoota Area Grid Storage (MAGS) and implement solutions that increase the system's reliability during outages.
We’re happy to share that MAGS successfully provided backup power to Mallacoota yesterday while our crews disconnected the town from the electricity grid to complete essential bushfire preparation work nearby.
These works involved a lot of careful planning to manage excess solar available in the grid due to yesterday's sunny weather. Find out more on our website: https://bit.ly/mags-update-september
While there’s still some remaining work to ensure MAGS is operating at its full potential, we’d like to say a big thank you for the community's patience over the past few months through ongoing improvement works.
