MC24 - We are a bit late getting this out to our FB friends, however here's a great report from MC2024 Tournament Director – Jeff Brunsting.

First, I would like to thank everyone who was a part of the tournament, volunteers and players - it would not have been the same without you.

Secondly, What a weekend it was!!

I think that everyone loved the course design. It came about because of input from several individuals from a wide variety of divisions and skill levels and was then pulled together by local lead designers Caelan Haramis and Markus Villota.

Some of the highlights over the weekend are listed below and I have pasted links to the full results further down.

Saturday
• Caelan’s Ace on hole 6!!
• Pen Liu had an awesome second round score of – 6.
• Chris (Shutterbug) Scott with a 929 rated second round which helped to secure a very comfortable victory in MA4. Well done, Chris!
• The life membership plaque, disc and mini presented to me on the day by President Mike Van der Linden on behalf of the MDGC Board to commemorate the Life Membership awarded earlier in the year. I was completely blindsided by the presentation and touched to receive it. It would come as no surprise but, Bespoke Disc Golf once again did an incredible job with the presentation. I had to show it off on Sunday as well.

Sunday
• Tim Bohan’s -10, 1029 rated round in round 1.
• Chicago blow in, Cooper Thompson, with an event score of -3 giving him the win in MA40 with a mere 9-point lead over the second placed local. I think we may be seeing more of Cooper in the future.
• PRKD coverage. It is always a privilege to have PRKD cover our events and it’s a great resource for the future.

There were only 2 players silly enough to play both days. They were Toby Beasley and me. I’m not sure how Toby pulled up, but I was wrecked on Monday.

Shout out to photographers Dan and Josh Bradshaw for the great photos of the two days’ play. A few favourites are posted here, and the full catalogue can be viewed at:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/RDHebxAEd8U8aEUo6
Please do not share any photos except for the ones that you are in, and if there are others in the photo, make sure you have their permission before sharing. The link will only be active for a limited time.

You have probably seen Josh behind the lens at a few of Melbourne’s events and he just loves taking photos. For MC24 Josh took most of the photos and edited the 2000 odd taken over the two days.

Thanks and Praise (Roll Credits) - Thanks to:
• Narada Guzman, The Man Cave and Stuff for providing players packs. Please check out the great work that the Man Cave do and support them with donations or purchases from the Stuff website.
• The lead course designers Markus Villota and Caelan Haramis and everyone who helped to design the fun and challenging course.
• All the volunteers who helped with setup and breakdown. I won’t list them in case I leave someone out, but you know who you are and that you are loved.
• Those who donated their baskets to supplement the baskets that the MDGC has.
• Bespoke Disc Golf for producing the trophies.
• Dan and Josh Bradshaw were on site Saturday afternoon and Sunday and took some incredible photos.
• Doug Adams did a great course preview with the help of his family. Check out this and other great content on his YouTube Channel.
• PRKD media came on board to film the event on Sunday. It is always a privilege them around.

Until next year, kind regards and thanks for your support. Jeff

The weather at MC24 was reminiscent of Mid Year Mando Madness on 29 June 24, especially for those who played both.

Here's some great photos of the morning doubles round, taken by Bradshaw photos (Dan & Josh Bradshaw) with the link below for full round up of photos of the morning round.

The morning random doubles round saw 28 players brave the weather to play a modified best shot format (each teams could only take 2 drives in a row from each player). Despite the restrictions, two teams rose above the rest to shoot hot rounds of -5 (Mike + Wayne, Aidan + Roland).

https://photos.app.goo.gl/WGV6pvayyJ28Uoem8

Please only share photos of you and the link will only be available for 6 months - enjoy and thanks again Dan and Josh.

MC24 / Life Membership Jeff Brunsting

At the MDGC AGM in March 24, Jeff Brunsting was deservedly awarded Life Membership of Melbourne Disc Golf Club.

We posted this great news on FB at the time, however we have had to wait until MC24 to be able to present Jeff with a commemorative plaque and disc, honouring his work and achievements.

Our thanks to Bespoke Disc Golf for the fab design and manufacture of the plaque and the disc - a glow Piwakawaka - in case you weren't aware Jeff loves his RPM Discs Piwakawaka's.

And yes Jeff, we know the disc will go in your bag, no better place for it!

Melbourne Celebrates 2024 kicks off tomorrow at the "pop-up" course at Bundoora Park.

Given weather conditions today and the predications for tomorrow and Sunday - 9-12 degrees, showers, possible hail and winds of 25-35 km/h there's a chance that some discs could end up fairly close to the city in the photo below.

Feedback from the practice round today included: "Bundoora course is sick, well done crew, work on that weather though please"; "Pencil me in for a bogey on every hole if the wind is up on Sunday like it was today."; "Bundoora Beast"; "Harsh but fair."

If you want to check out the scores during the day link below

Good luck and ability to all 🥶🌧💨🥏

📢📢 MGDC is excited to announce the 2024 Melbourne Celebrates tournament!

We are going back to where it all began. This year’s tournament will be run at Bundoora Park in Darebin City Council. There are probably only a handful of the OG disc golfers from Melbourne and Geelong who remember this, but when MDGC first formed in 2008, many league days were held at Bundoora Park. It’s a huge space with so many options to produce a championship course and some great facilities including an onsite café at the Farm entrance.

Tournament Director: Jeff Brunsting
Dates: July 27 and 28
Venue: Bundoora Park in the City Of Darebin
PDGA C tier
DGV Tour Event
Rego: Opening on Saturday June 1 via the Disc Golf Victoria
Fees: TBC but expected to be $45/75. Low cost / low frills event.
Pro Payout: 100% of the net pro contribution

On the next two points, if you have any preference one way or the other and are planning to attend, let us know by filling in the 30 second survey linked below.

Format: 2 rounds of 18
❓ One round on Saturday and one on Sunday with tee times OR
2 player pools with 2 rounds each day, shot gun start - like the recent Ruffey Rumble.
(Either way there will be a cap of around 150 players)

❓ ADG: This will most likely be a tour event but you can have your say on that as well.

https://us10.list-manage.com/survey?u=c18d3c338126e2c87d571f59a&id=feb1f31fed

Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks. We're really looking forward to this event and bringing disc golf to Melbourne's north!

Another group of “sporting” folks introduced to disc golf this morning at Bicentennial Park, Chelsea.

✨ Women’s Global Event Melbourne Report! ✨

Sunday May 19th saw Bicentennial Park in Chelsea host 28 women competing in the Melbourne event of the 2024 PDGA Women’s Global Event disc golf tournament.

The WGE is a PDGA initiative held every two years, and sees women disc golfers from around the world competing in a virtual tournament against the globe’s players in their respective divisions.

The Melbourne tournament was the largest WGE event out of the nine held in Australia over the weekend, and possibly the largest women only disc golf tournament ever held in Australia. Players traveled from as far as Lara, Warrigal and Castlemaine to attend.

The weather was chilly, with scattered showers and cold winds a constant throughout the day. This led to lots of beanies, jackets and gloves but didn’t discourage a fun day of disc golf.

The format of the day featured two rounds of 14 holes, with lunch supplied by The Corner Hideout cafe providing a delicious treat between the rounds. A brisk Ace Race during the lunch break was a lot of fun and an ideal warm-up before the second round.

We are pleased to congratulate our winners on the day:

🏆🥇🏆
FPO: Huss
FA1: Georgia Carroll
FA40: Melanie Ellis
FA50: Serena Arnold
FA55: Janet Ford-Adams
FA60: Jenny Thomas
FA70: Gail Lynch
FA2: Anita Weber
FA4: Bridget Albiston

Ace Race: Melanie Ellis
CTB FA4 Bella Jurgens
CTB FA40/FA50/FA55/FA60/FA70 Jenny Thomas
CTB FPO/FA1/FA2: Huss
Most Improved Score between rounds: Rachel Johnson (-12)

🥏⛓️ Social Day Wrap - Round 12 -Ruffey Lake Park ⛓️🥏

43 competitors tackled the course on a sunny Saturday morning. Chris Ronalds, Aidan Howard and Mike Van der Linden all went bogey free, and Leo D***s got the only eagle of the day on 5
However, nobody was able to catch Markus Villota whose -10 was enough to win his third social day of the year. Mark Green's raw score of -4 won Div B, and Damian Musci took out Div C with +2.

There was some extra entertainment between the rounds, with an Ace Race on hole 1 - nobody was able to hit metal, so the prizes of two Melbournce Celebrates '23 discs remain unclaimed.

❓ Comment below if you think we should do it again at a future social day ❓

🎯 Div A CTB - Chris Ronalds
🎯 Div B CTB - Philip Hall
🎯 Div C CTB - Matt Mutter

🥇 Div A Handicap - Tim Ware
🥇 Div B Handicap - Tom Mason
🥇 Div C Handicap - Damian Musci (the handicap was actually won by Matt Mutter, but Damian gets the prize as Matt also won the CTB)

⏭️ The next round will be at Melton in two weeks on Sunday 2nd June, followed by Bald Hill and Ruffey Lake again to close out season 1.

Social Day Wrap - May Southeast

A beautifully crisp and clear morning saw 30 people tee off at Bicentennial Park on Mother’s Day

Lachlan McKenzie's hot round of -7 was enough to win both the raw score and the Div A handicap.
Division B was a close one, with the top 8 separated by just 2 strokes. Again the raw score and handicap were won by the same person, in this case Sebastian Gutierrez with a -1.
Congratulations to Jennifer Findlay for taking the win for Division C handicap with a personal best performance. The best raw score in Div C was a +1 from Damian Musci.

All of the division handicap winners receive a $25 MDGC shop voucher, as do the CTB winners:
Division A - Juan Rueda
Division B - Braden Boyack
Division C - Damian Musci

You might have noticed that the overall Social Day season standings table is not being calculated and displayed the way it should be - overall standings are not meant to be dependent on division. This is due to a bug in Metrix, which we are working on resolving as soon as possible.

The next Social Day is at Ruffey Lake next Saturday 18th May. Register now at https://discgolfmetrix.com/2830817

Round 10 of the 2024 MDGC Social Day Season 1 was held on Saturday at the Heathdale course in Werribee. The early morning fog made way for a bright day, with 25 players hitting the course.

The hot round of the day belonged to Markus Villota with a -10, with Tim Ware and Pen Liu finishing T2 on -8.
The best raw score in Div B was Mat Daniels with -5, and in Div C it was Glen Ralston with -4. And a special mention to newcomer Juan Rueda in Div X, who was only playing his third Metrix round but managed a -5 to end up in tied 4th place position overall. Aaron Piacentini had the only bogey-free round of the day, finishing on -4.

The highlight of the day was from Tarron Anderson, who threw in the ace on hole 7. A 58m hole but with plenty of trees to contend with, Tarron threaded his DGA Squall through the gap to take out the first Social Day Ace Pot of 2024. $500 is heading your way Tarron. The good news for everyone else is that there is still $462 left in the Ace Pot, and it should be back to the $500 cap by the end of the month.

CTB Winners each receive a $25 MDGC Shop voucher:
Div A - Juan Rueda
Div B - Choo Tran
Div C - Glen Ralston

Handicap Winners each receive a $25 MDGC Shop voucher:
Div A - Tim Ware
Div B - Ash Weidner
Div C - was won by Glen Ralston, but since there is a limit of one prize per player the voucher goes to 2nd place finisher John Baker

This Sunday the 12th is Mother's Day, and nothing says "I love you, Mum" quite like bringing her along to play Social Day #11 with you at Bicentennial Park, Chelsea.

🚨🥏 Vic Open Wrap Up! 🥏🚨

The Vic Open is always one of the most anticipated tournaments of the year for the Melbourne Eagles and the 2024 edition did not disappoint.

Inverleigh hosted this year, giving those used to Melbourne’s more open fairways a chance to see just how much damage trees and acacia can do to your score and to your mental fortitude. The Geelong crew have done a lot of work on the course, and it showed. The course looked great, while remaining slightly terrifying as always.

Thursday saw the players attack the White Tees in doubles format, with the Geelong crew (Paddy and Tim) showing just how much the extra practice helps, shooting -18 through 21 holes.

After the doubles wrapped up, everyone gathered at the clubrooms to watch a live recording of PRKD Media’s Clubhouse, full of laughs, outrage, drinks and merriment into the night.

Friday was Day 1 of the tournament, with those camping at the course waking up to kangaroos on the fairways, egg and bacon rolls from the clubhouse and the early cards trying to negotiate the trees of hole 1. By the end of the day, Dave Perry was sitting 1 off the lead in MPO, Hailey Cooperrider 4th in FPO, Rueben Berg sitting 2 clear in MP40, 4 eagles top of the standings in MA40 (Paul, Anthony, Tim, Tarron), Sam Stoia showing MA2 how to play the Inverleigh White Tees (the only player under par), Mitch Evers 2nd in MA3, Anita Weber 2nd in Fa2, and Damian Musci holding the lead from Ash Breukers in 2nd in MA4.

Friday night had players either drowning their sorrows or celebrating their successes with local craft beers from the bar, the obligatory Brunsting corn hole, various mini disc challenges and an absolutely chaotic 20 person glow round that didn’t finish until almost midnight.

Day 2 saw Dave Perry back up his round 1 with another -6 on the golds, opening up a 4 shot lead over Luke Bayne (the last minute addition). Hailey and Rueben maintained their positions, while Al Don stepped into the lead in MA40 and Brennan Venten made the final day lead card in MA1. MA2 An all Melbourne MA2 lead card was secured by Sam Stoia, James Honeyman, Austin Palya and Narada Guzman. Mitch Evers held on to 2nd in MA3 while Choo Tran moved into the lead in MA4 over Damian Musci.

Dave Perry tried his best to fend off the fast finishing Dylan Feldman from the chase-card. It took a course record from Dylan to push Dave into 2nd place, with Dave maintaining his solid golf to average 1004 for the event. MA40 also turned up the excitement, with three players tied for the lead going into the dreaded hole 18 (Lee Thompson, Al Don, and Tim Ware). Al and Lee managed to hold on to force a playoff, with Lee taking the win in the first playoff hole. Sam Stoia secured a dominant win in MA2, with Choo Tran and Tobias Weber also taking home the victory in their divisions.

Once again the Vic Open proved to be an amazing tournament - congratulations to all who played and conquered the notoriously difficult Inverleigh course. Thanks again to all the Geelong crew and volunteers who put on a great event.

AGM 2024 - 2023 Board Report.pdf | Powered by Box 01/05/2024

The MDGC 2024 Annual General Meeting was held on 18 March 2024.

As we posted a while ago, the highlight of the AGM was the announcement that MDGC Life Membership had been awarded to retiring President Jeff Brunsting for his many and great years with the Club.

Congratulations to the 2024 Board members:

President - Mike Van der Linden
Treasurer - Tom Mason
Secretary - Gail P Lynch
Risk Management - Simon Farrar
Board Advisor - Paul Arden

It's a small Board this year, and we'd love to have some more help on the Board and in Operational Committee areas so we can continue the great work of 2023.

Areas where we particularly need support are - course development, tournaments & events, stakeholder engagement (members, councils etc.) and communications.

The commitment you make can be very flexible - "Whatever the contribution, every bit helps the Club, our members and disc golf."

You can view the 2023 Annual Report via the following link.

PDGA Women's Global Event - MDGC WGE 2024

Women disc golfers - have you seen our posts about the MDGC WGE happening on Sunday 19 May??

Proudly supported by the City of Kingston, we are organising a fun, small and very beginner friendly event.

Registrations are coming in steadily, and we thought we'd highlight some of the players.

First up are Jes and Bella - sisters in law and disc golf!

Jes and Bella started playing with their families during the late stages of the covid lockdowns, and this became a regular family event, with dogs and children and disc golf.

As Jes said, "It's our first time doing anything like this so we're super nervous but excited to meet others." Yes, Jes & Bella we are excited too - and all our other players. 🥏

📸 below are Jes & Bella's practising shots and an earlier family group photo complete with 🐾🐾 Lola and Ginny.

Bald Hill Social Day - 13.4.24
A few Melbourne players ventured over to Mount Gambier this weekend to throw some plastic in a volcano. This left 43 people playing at the Bald Hill Social Day today.

- Rueben performed a lovely Welcome to Country speech. Thank you Rueben.
- It was great to have Mel join in all the way from Sweden - looks like travelling agrees with his game.
- Levi played his third round and received his Metrix rating today. Now he can compete for Div B CTB's.-
- Braden tried to collect more Aces but unfortunately for him, the Ace Pot still stands!

The par 5 hole 5 hole was defeated by 5 Eagles today in comp, and 6 overall with Tarron playing a practise round and eagling in his warm up round. The eagles were from Rueben, Tom, Brett, Jacob and Chris R, with Chris nearly getting an albatross, having parked his second shot under the basket. Maybe there's some truth in getting some good sleep the night before!

Congratulations to the following winners:
> Division A handicap was won by Chris S.
> Division B handicap was won by Zsolt.
> Division C handicap was won by Ryan M.

With more trees being removed recently, the CTB on hole 2 was a great opportunity for the big arms to have a go, and they got close. Congrats to the following winners:
> Division A CTB on hole 2 was won by Mikey.
> Division B CTB on hole 9 was won by Lachlan, and
> Division C CTB on hole 10 was won by Carlton.

Until next time...and thanks to Janet Ford-Adams for the report.
