*UPDATE: Adoption fee added*
Animal #: 576406
Species: Red-tailed Black Cockatoo (Naso)
S*x: Male
Adoption Fee: $1500
We have been asked by DEECA in a special circumstance to help find a home for "Ralph" the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo.
Ralph is about 5 1/2 years old and was hand-raised.
Ralph is a very smart boy and is clicker-trained to "station", "touch", show his "wings" and steps up and down. He was even free-flown in his younger years. He has a preference for men but has previously been trained by a woman as well.
In recent times Ralph, through reasons out of his previous owner's control, has not been able to receive the time and attention he needs which has caused his training to slip a bit but with the love and dedication of his new owners in a stable environment we are confident he will shine!
He has previously had close relationships with people but is currently feeling quite insecure and will need his new owner to be patient and work with him to redevelop that trust.
Ralph has lived mostly indoors but may be open to an aviary with a partner bird. He enjoys being amongst the goings on of the house and has lived in the same room as other large parrots who he likes to talk to.
Ralph is used to a healthy diet and fortunately loves veggies! He also enjoys fruit, sprouted/soaked seed and sunflower seeds (though the later are usually saved for training).
Ralph is currently in foster care in Romsey and transport options will be discussed with the new owner.
License Type Required: Advanced
To enter the ballot click here: https://forms.gle/ftkeYDyQ4fSBxycQ9
The ballot in this case acts as an EXPRESSION OF INTEREST. While we will run the ballot, the winner will be contacted to discuss their suitability to make sure we find the very best match for Ralph.
If we find the winner and Ralph are not a good fit we will progress to the next person.
Ballot/expression of interest closes: Sunday 14/07/2024 @ 6.00pm. The successful applicant will be required to complete a form that must be submitted and approved by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action before the animal can be released from Homeless Herps.
Before applying for the ballot please ensure you can meet the following criteria:
1. Be open and willing to have a discussion with us to assess your suitability as a new home, including but not limited to; your experience with parrots, members of your household including pets and intended housing and care.
2. You must be willing to provide proof of your appropriate housing set up for the bird.
3. You must have a current and appropriate wildlife license. PLEASE check you have this before applying. We are not able to hold the bird for people who are applying or waiting for their license.
4. Ensure you have the money for the adoption fee to be paid within 48 hours of being accepted to adopt. This payment is non-refundable and needs to be paid before we send any paperwork through to complete the adoption. Non-payment will result in you forfeiting the animal.
5. Work with us to organise suitable transport for the bird from the foster home, this may include further costs if you require use of a transport service.
If you win the ballot and fail to meet the above requirements you will forfeit the animal and it will be rehomed to the next successful applicant.

Homeless Herps
Each year in Australia many reptiles and amphibians are found as strays (i.e. escaped or dumped pets), seized by wildlife authorities from unlicenced keepers or translocated from their natural range through misadventure (e.g. accidently shipped in goods from interstate). Laws require a licence to keep most species of reptile and amphibian so legally rehoming these lost animals can be problematic.
Homeless Herps is fully licenced by the Victorian Government’s Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning to take in these animals and legally rehome them.
All animals are fully vet checked by experienced reptile and amphibian veterinarians from the team at The Unusual Pets Vets - Peninsula. Where possible they are sexed and microchipped.
A small adoption fee is charged to cover the costs involved in housing and microchipping the animals.
For all enquiries please contact The Unusual Pet Vets - Peninsula on (03) 8738 3210 or [email protected]
