Gaza Crisis

9 months on from the escalation of violence in Gaza and women are facing constant fear around pregnancy and giving birth. Diana discovered she was pregnant shortly after violence escalated last October and gave birth to her son, Yaman, under intense bombing and gunfire last week.

“I had a difficult labour. I was so frightened as the bombing was intense and didn’t stop even for a minute. My mother was so afraid for me and the baby – she prayed and prayed that we’d still be alive by dawn. There was no special care for the baby when he was born, and he was not fully examined.”

Diana is not alone.

Over 50,000 women are currently pregnant in Gaza and with the trauma experienced, many will miscarry and not make it to birth. For the women who defy these odds, they will likely give birth in a tent, a temporary shelter, or even in the streets amongst rubble – with no medication as bombs continue to drop around them.

CARE International’s Palestinian partner, Juzoor, has set up clinics offering care and volunteer midwives to assist vulnerable women. CARE has also distributed 5,500 baby kits with essential products for babies and mothers.

Today is a reminder of the millions who have been displaced due to conflict, crisis, and natural disasters. In Northwest Syria, Samira and her family of 13 are only one story among millions. The war forced them, like countless others, to flee their homes and become displaced. We will continue to take action and make sure no one faces displacement alone. #WorldRefugeeDay

Famine is looming in Gaza
The humanitarian situation remains dire, with severe shortages of essential services and supplies. We welcome the International Court of Justice ruling ordering Israel to immediately halt its military operation in Rafah and open the Rafah crossing. The major escalation of Israeli military operations in Rafah and the north of Gaza has already had a devastating impact on civilians. While the population is starving, only a trickle of aid is entering Gaza with aid crossings closed. Donate now: https://bit.ly/3R8etKB

Fleeing is not a choice, but solidarity is. On this #internationalrefugeeday we acknowledge the resilience and bravery of individuals forced to seek refuge from their homeland — no one should face displacement alone. Some flee by jumping on the back of a truck full of other people huddled closely together — to make room for one more family. Some have tirelessly saved enough money to take a public bus to the border. Many others walk. They walk for days, weeks, and sometimes even months through the dry desert with little food or water. Isnino, describes how she managed the more than 400 kms from her home in Somalia to Dadaab refugee camp, in Kenya: “We walked the whole way. It took us one month. I was scared that wild animals would take my children away and eat them.” Others, like Saruro, have solely experienced life within the boundaries of refugee camps. “My family fled Somalia when the war broke out and there was a lot of killing. I do not remember Somalia. Dadaab feels like my home because I have lived here for over 30 years,” she said. When asked what she wishes for, Saruro looks down at her 10-day-old daughter before she answers: “My wish is that my family and myself have good shelter, a functioning latrine, and more soap.” If she could wish for anything in the world, Saruro concludes with: “My biggest wish is, that one day I will see the modern world just once.” In spite of their arduous journey, refugees bring forth a wealth of cultural heritage, skills, and talents, weaving a vibrant tapestry that enriches the very essence of their new communities. Today, we recognise the power of inclusion. The power of safety and refuge from harm, the power of support and opportunity — to find a renewed sense of belonging.

One in four people living in the Pacific Islands are likely to be living below their country’s basic needs poverty line. We must support communities to adapt to the changing climate. By working collaboratively with women-led organisations and drawing upon local and Indigenous knowledge of the land, we can prevent climate change from pushing more people even deeper into poverty.

The best defence is a good offence. Working with local people before a disaster hits helps to identify vulnerable groups, create thorough safety plans, strengthen existing infrastructure, establish early warning systems, and plan for that communities’ specific needs.
