CARE Australia
Dedicated to saving lives and ending poverty, with women and girls at the heart of our work 🌏
Over the past year – from the South Pacific to the Horn of Africa – together, we have supported more than 1.37 million people across 23 countries, delivered humanitarian assistance in times of crisis to more than 445,618 people, and responded to 37 emergencies across 16 countries.
As we work to empower women to grow their own food, rebuild communities after a disaster, and earn a living to support themselves and their families, our donors support continues to have a lasting impact.
9 months on from the escalation of violence in Gaza and women are facing constant fear around pregnancy and giving birth. Diana discovered she was pregnant shortly after violence escalated last October and gave birth to her son, Yaman, under intense bombing and gunfire last week.
“I had a difficult labour. I was so frightened as the bombing was intense and didn’t stop even for a minute. My mother was so afraid for me and the baby – she prayed and prayed that we’d still be alive by dawn. There was no special care for the baby when he was born, and he was not fully examined.”
Diana is not alone.
Over 50,000 women are currently pregnant in Gaza and with the trauma experienced, many will miscarry and not make it to birth. For the women who defy these odds, they will likely give birth in a tent, a temporary shelter, or even in the streets amongst rubble – with no medication as bombs continue to drop around them.
CARE International’s Palestinian partner, Juzoor, has set up clinics offering care and volunteer midwives to assist vulnerable women. CARE has also distributed 5,500 baby kits with essential products for babies and mothers.

We are horrified by yesterday’s airstrikes targeting Al-Mawassi area in Khan Younis, which have reportedly killed at least 90 and injured about 300 people, including many women and children. The Israeli military had designated the area a “safe zone” where displaced civilians have set up tents and makeshift shelters.
The conditions in this area are terrible, meaning that makeshift shelters are built on top of each other and there is nowhere else for them to go. Indiscriminate targeting of settlements means more death, destruction and displacement for thousands of people.
As humanitarians working in Gaza we know that nowhere is safe in Gaza. Most of the Gaza Strip has been destroyed by the conflict, with civilians disproportionally bearing the brunt of this conflict. Civilians in Gaza are constantly living under the threat of bombs, disease, starvation and displacement.
We again urge all parties to this conflict to abide by their obligations under international humanitarian and human rights law, including respecting the principles of humanity, proportionality, distinction, and military necessity at all times.
Civilians must be protected and humanitarian workers must be given safe and unhindered access to reach populations in need. An immediate and sustained ceasefire must be agreed.
The global water crisis is a crisis for women and girls 💧

In Raghad's village, women and children used to carry heavy buckets on long treks for water of uncertain quality. But thanks to the village's main water source being fixed, Raghad and her community in Yemen now enjoy clean, safe water from their taps.
With your tax deductible donation, you can help transform lives like Raghad's. Together, we can help deliver access to clean water – one of the most basic human rights.

Why are so many women and girls at risk?
Climate-fuelled disasters, mass displacement and violent conflicts are creating a global water crisis. And in our unequal world, women and girls are bearing the brunt of this crisis. Living daily without accessible toilets or having enough safe water to drink can lead to increased safety risks, disease outbreaks and poor maternal and child health.
Without reliable access to clean water and sanitation, the simple act of quenching your thirst or going to the toilet can become incredibly dangerous.
That's why we need your help – a tax deductible donation could help increase access to safe water, sanitation and save lives.

Women are the backbone to looking after the well-being of their family and communities, often taking the daily responsibility of collecting water. With the installation of tube wells, women and girls have safe access to clean water that is essential for drinking, cooking, washing, and sanitation.

Can you imagine having no choice but to drink water that might kill you?
At 13 years old, Khadijah was faced with the decision everyday to walk long distances on treacherous routes, leaving her vulnerable to harassment, physical attacks and sexual assault – just to find water.
“I feel upset every time my mother asks me to fetch water. I have experienced danger and injured myself many times.”
The water that Khadijah sacrificed her safety and education for, was also frequently dangerous to drink. Many children in her village died of cholera because they could only access contaminated water.

For women and girls living in crisis, conflict or poverty, collecting clean water or even going to the toilet carries incredible risk to their safety and wellbeing.
When water isn't close by or toilets aren’t equipped with locks, women and girls must travel long distances leaving them more vulnerable to physical attacks and sexual assault.
Everyone has the right to clean, safe water and sanitation.

Justine McMahon, Country Director of CARE Papua New Guinea, speaks with ABC News news about the current emergency situation unfolding in Enga.
Recently, CARE Australia's Pacific partners came together to share and learn about gender equality programming. These local leaders are innovating and adapting ways to create a fairer economy and advance disability inclusion.

In Northern Bangladesh, there is no hunger problem but a nutrition problem. Vegetables are harder to come by and not usually grown in the fields – and climate change is making this worse.
But, CARE's JANO project is changing that. We're supporting communities to grow healthy vegetable gardens in schools and homes, just like Morium's.
Morium used to grow to***co, which took a toll on her health and the soil. Now, she enjoys a vibrant vegetable garden, filled with nutrients for her family and herself.
“I grow vegetables now and I already notice a difference in my health. I eat better. I feel stronger. When I was growing to***co, I had major lung problems. Now I can breathe normally again. I will never go back to to***co and tell others how important it is to have access to nutritious food in your garden,” she says.
The JANO project uses different activities to change cultural and traditional gender roles and to establish healthy practices and nutrition in Northern Bangladesh – a country where 51 million people face food insecurity.
The humanitarian situation continues to worsen.
Approximately 1.9 million people are displaced and 75% of housing is destroyed or damaged. The two recent airstrikes in safe zones – within 30 hours – has killed multiple people and the numbers continue to come in.
A massive increase in humanitarian aid is now needed. The siege on Gaza must be lifted. An immediate and sustained ceasefire is the only way to prevent further suffering.

The humanitarian situation remains dire, with severe shortages of essential services and supplies.
We welcome the International Court of Justice ruling ordering Israel to immediately halt its military operation in Rafah and open the Rafah crossing. The major escalation of Israeli military operations in Rafah and the north of Gaza has already had a devastating impact on civilians.
While the population is starving, only a trickle of aid is entering Gaza with aid crossings closed.

The taboo of menstruation is one of the most widespread forms of sexist discrimination in the world.
In many countries, girls and women are considered impure when they menstruate. They are socially excluded or even exiled from their homes. Girls stop going to school at puberty because of the shame they feel and the lack of appropriate sanitation.
Menstruation is not just a health issue, it's also a social and political issue for gender equality.
Join us this by sharing these striking illustrations: denouncing the shame and taboo surrounding menstruation.
At 3am on May 24th, a massive landslide engulfed the Enga Province in Papua New Guinea. Entire villages have been left devastated and homes buried under 8 metres of rock and rubble – where an estimated 670 men, women and children slept.
CARE International PNG is working to deliver emergency relief with an initial supply of food, water and basic hygiene. In the recovery phase, CARE will support communities with shelter, WASH facilities, protection and agriculture.

Single mother of five, Ezra is the sole provider for her family. The grocery store she owns is her only possession.
Following last years earthquake in Syria, Ezra lacked the funds to replace the lost and damaged items in her shop. “My only hope for a decent life hinged on rebuilding my shop.”
CARE and our partner Shafak supported Ezra to rebuild her store and purchase a new fridge and other supplies. “I can return to work and provide them with a life of dignity,” she says.

“Life before displacement was peaceful and simple. Our house was big and beautiful," says Laila who who has been displaced from Idlib to Aleppo in northwest Syria.
As the Syria conflict enters its 13th year, the humanitarian situation in the northwest of the country continues to deteriorate. A few months after the February 2023 earthquakes, communities have grappled with shortages of humanitarian funding and a renewed escalation of violence.
Laila says, "My wish is to see my home one last time before my death. To return home and reunite with my relatives.”

“It is hard for a human being to constantly live in fear, expecting the worst to happen at any moment. The most difficult part for me is that I worry for my two children. They are so small, and I worry they will die of a virus if they don’t die from the bombs. It has been really cold, and the only clothing I could take were a few items I grabbed when the bombs were falling around us,” says mother of two Nadia.

“No one is suffering more in this war than those who have yet to utter their first word. This war is causing an entire generation of children to lose their childhood and future.
"Imagine watching your baby perish in front of your eyes, simply because you cannot get her the food she needs? Imagine hearing your children’s cries for bread, but there is nothing you can give them?
"The situation is simply unbearable, unjustifiable and needs to stop immediately,” says Hiba Tibi, Country Director for CARE in West Bank and Gaza.
CARE reiterates its calls for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, and urgent action to ensure access to healthcare, food, water, and the other basic necessities of life for Palestinians in Gaza, especially women and children.
