Sadly today's FOOTSCRAY FINDERS Trash & Treasure Market has been cancelled. The organisers are in the process of moving out of their 'home' of 6 years, and decided that logistically they could not offer an organised and safe space for the marke today. Will keep you posted when they announce a new venue - probably post Winter!

Thought it was about time we changed the front page photo of the shop....so the main photo is now one of the last we took after the massive job of dismantling and destroying such a much loved Melbourne entity...our beloved Basement Discs home of 29 years. Shame the landlord wouldn't even allow us to reach the round figure of 30!!!
Ironically, we left the space looking so much better than what we found all those years ago...but a space that we knew WE could transform with our vision & passion (with the help of many great friends!) into what it became...a meeting place for like-minded music lovers, a showcase for incredible musicians both local, interstate & internationally based, and what we hope was always regarded as a welcoming space. We miss it of course, but more importantly we miss all the friends we made, the passionate conversations about music, the incredible live performances we were all treated to....the comradre, music, joy & laughter. So many losses of the most amazing musicians in past few months...just crazy and devastating...these people have made our lives sooo much better and enriched by their talent. Today reeling at the news of the passing of the extraordinary talent that KARL WALLINGER of WORLD PARTY was and remains. An original member of THE WATERBOYS , he went on to establish his very own & incredible band WORLD PARTY. At 66 it is just ridiculous to hear that this amazing talent is no longer with us. But what a lasting musical legacy he has left - and we can only hope that brings solace and comfort to his family knowing how much his music and creative energy has meant to so many.

Have spent last hour or so listening, dancing & celebrating what an amazing catalogue of songs he wrote and they amassed and yet not nearly enough people know them...get on the bus now...better late than never guys! Honour this man's talent & investigate the great albums WORLD PARTY made and be truly awarded we promise you! RIP dear Karl...like so many of your compadres..gone too soon and way too young. HOY HOY! An exciting couple of re-issues by one of the most underrated but one of the finest and most original American bands, evah (imho), LITTLE FEAT. Rhino/Warner are releasing two classic '70s albums by the FEATS, their second "SAILIN' SHOES" and the third "DIXIE CHICKEN" as deluxe 2CD sets, Remastered, demos, outtakes and previously unreleased live concerts. I so remember seeing LITTLE FEAT, July 1976 at Festival Hall, what a show, supported by BILLY T (Joe Creighton, Ross Hannaford- Oh why has their fine album never been re-issued?). The last few years have been great for FEATS fans with the re-issue of their official "bootleg" (actually produced by Lowell George) "ELECTIF LYCANTHOPY" and the magnificent deluxe box set of "WAITING FOR COLUMBUS". Lucinda Williams’ music has gotten her through her darkest days. It’s been that way since growing up amid family chaos in the Deep South, as she recounts in her candid new memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I told You.

Over the past two years, it’s been the force driving her recovery from a debilitating stroke she suffered on November 17, 2020, at age 67. Her masterful, multi-Grammy-winning songwriting has never deserted her. To wit, her stunning, sixteenth studio album, Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart, brims over with some of the best work of her career. And though Williams can no longer play her beloved guitar – a constant companion since age 12 – her distinctive vocals sound better than ever.

The band rocks out on the album’s jubilant opening track, “Let’s Get the Band Back Together,” which features a gang of background singers, including Margo Price and Buddy Miller. Inspired by “that need for community after all the isolation of the pandemic,” Williams offers, the song is “about getting old friends together again who’d drifted apart.” Price also joins her on the bluesy protest, “This Is Not My Town.” The evocative “New York Comeback” also includes guest vocalists – Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa.

JENNY LEWIS 'Joy'All' In 2021 Jenny Lewis enrolled in an all-star songwriting workshop organised by her friend and sometime-collaborator Beck, who challenged her to write a track every day in her Tennessee home to a series of specific guidelines. Those efforts form the bulk of the ex-Rilo Kiley frontwoman’s fifth solo album ‘Joy’All’, a record chiefly influenced by how the pandemic-pause caused her to reflect on her life and various losses, before concluding that the pursuit of joy is paramount.

At times, you have to pause and remember that Jenny Lewis is now 25 years into her music career. It’s startling, because ‘Joy’All’ simply feels so fresh, so buoyant, so vivacious, that it recalls an artist just starting out. There’s an innocence, as well as a sense of focus, that is often dulled over time. Not here, though. Jenny Lewis is allowing her art to age like a fine wine, with ‘Joy’All’ featuring some of her finest work. ON THIS WEEKEND......JUNE 16,17,18, 1966. One of the most pivotal and influential live music events took place in Monterey Ca. The Monterey International Pop Festival, 3 days of concerts for charity was organized in 7 weeks by Mama&Papas' John Phillips, produce Lou Adler and promoter Alan Pariser. The now legendary line-up drew from local San Francisco acts (Grateful Dead, Country Joe & the Fish, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Steve Miller, Jefferson Airplane and Big Brother feat. Janis Joplin) and L.A.( Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Johnny River and The Mamas and Papas ). And as if that line-up wasn't enough, it also featured the first major U.S. appearances of The Who and The Jimi Hendrix Experience as well as Eric Burdon & the Animals, Canned Heat, Otis Redding, Simon and Garfunkel, Laura Nyro, the Blues Project, Hugh Masekela and Ravi Shankar, among others. Whew! And all this for the princely sum of $3-$6.50.

Have just heard the very sad news that BRODERICK SMITH has passed at the age of 75. What an incredible artist, writer, vocalist & harmonica player. Original member of iconic boogie blues outfit CARSON. I saw his next outfit, THE DINGOES many times at THE STATION HOTEL in Prahran "back in the day" and what a band they were.. made up of just incredible musicians ...alongside Brod...CHRIS STOCKLEY, KERRYN TOLHURST, ASH DAVIES & JOHN BOIS..having absolutely no idea that many many years later he would be performing on our wee stage at The Basement Discs.
We've chosen to share this incredible performance that Brod contributed to the wonderful memorial/tribute concert to ANDY DURANT back in August 1980 (Andy sadly passed away at the ridiculously young age of 25.) Think it is so incredibly touching, memorable & an appropriate tribute to his voice & impressive interpretive talent (along with showcasing Andy's gifted songwriting).
All vale BRODERICK SMITH...an absolute giant in the pantheon of Australian Music, someone who achieved & created so much great music but remained quite the enigma, never that interested (seemingly) in fame....but his talent & music & legacy lives on. Our love & condolences to his many many friends & his family. He will remain in our hearts, ears, memories forever more.

A shear delight is the new release album by Rickie Lee Jones, "Pieces Of Treasure". Re-united with friend and legendary producer Russ Titleman (He produced Rickie Lee Jones' first, the classic self titled and "Pirates"), and at his suggestion Rickie has recorded this album of classic jazz tunes. Her smoky, sultry, laid back voice inhabits these oft recorded songs with something new and fresh. The production is clear, crisp and sparse. Her fifth covers project is a wonderful success.

Hurrah! A new Rodney Crowell album, the Chicago Sessions" will be with us next week. For his 22nd album he's enlisted the help of Wilco's Jeff Tweedy to produce, play and sing, also co-writing the song "Everything At Once". While most of the songs are newly written, two older songs that have been close to his heart for a long time also make an appearance. "You're Supposed To Be Feeding Good" was originally written by Rodney and recorded by Emmylou Harris and the other is the Townes Van Zandt classic "No Place To Fall". Enjoy.

Andy Fairweather Low has done it all, Starting in the '60's as a teen pop star in the chart topping band "Amen Corner" best known for their hits "Bend Me Shape Me", "(If Paradise Is) Half As Nice", and "High In The Sky', Andy has had a very successful solo career as well as being the go-to rhythm guitarist and musical director to the stars. These stars include George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Roger Waters and many more. It has been 10 years since his last studio release, "Zone-O-Tone" and his latest album doesn't disappoint. "FLANG DANG" was recorded over three weeks during lock-down at Rockfield Studios and is full of what Andy Fairweather Low does best. A fine new release by Canadian singer-songwriter, guitarist Leslie Feist usually known simply as Feist. "Multitudes" is the sixth solo release, (having also recorded with Broken Social Scene), the first since 2017's "Pleasure". A lot of momentous goings on took over Feist's life in the intervening years and are reflected in this powerful and moving album. We, at the Basement Discs were incredibly lucky to have Feist perform a fabulous in-store for us on her first tour to promote the "Let It Die" album.

Another fine album by one of Basement Discs favorite in-store performers, Ron Sexsmith. "The Vivian Line" is just wonderful. His songs may be sad ,at times, but they're of humanity, wonderfully melancholic, with much warmth and a touch of sentimentality. This is one beautiful and evocative album. Geraint Watkins is not only a wonderful singer, but he also plays great piano, guitar, accordion and is a very talented songwriter. And he has done so for the likes of Dave Edmunds, Van Morrison, Mark Knopfler, Paul McCartney and many more including his old friend Nick Lowe, who also returns the favor by playing in Geraint's band. Aide- memoire is his new 2CD set and is a wonderful selection of songs from his distinguished solo albums. Enjoy.

Some bands, songwriters just lend themselves to great cover versions of their songs. Bob Dylan is one and the Rolling Stones are definitely another. There have been some excellent blues albums covering the Stones ('Paint It Blue' being one example, sadly out of print),but this time it's in the hands of some great country artists, some new and up and coming and some really well known (Steve Earle, the Zac Brown Band, War and Treaty with the Osborne Bros) and this brilliant performance by Eric Church. Well, just sit back and listen to our wonderful Rebecca Barnard singing the title track from her delightful new album "The Night We Called It A Day". Although she rarely sings jazz this new CD reflects her families' roots and she performs some absolute classics as if she's sung them all her life. The magnificent voice of John Baldry (AKA Long John Baldry) on the album called "It Ain't Easy" and the album "Everything Stops For Tea", both produced by Rod Stewart and Elton John (one side each) featuring members of Rod's and Elton's bands. I'd previously passed over listening to him, mainly because of his big MOR hit "Let The Heartbreaks begin". Not his fault, record label pressure apparently. But when i eventually got around to it I was absolutely blown away by the depth and power of his voice. What had I been missing. Now both albums have been re-issued with loads of bonus tracks. Do yourself a favour and give him a listen. Both are now back in stock at...THE BASEMENT DISCS.
