Don’t every let anyone tell you that you are a nobody (compared to them) just because they have more followers on their social media profiles. This exact thing happened to me during the closing arguments of the case I brought against Canna Campbell and her business for IP theft, deceptive and misleading conduct, and passing off. Her barrister Ben McEniery alleged: “the applicant suffered “no brand damage” from his client using the term “financial foreplay” as the name of her podcast series. “There can be no reputational damage because there’s no evidence that Ms Korolak had a reputation in the financial foreplay trademark or brand.” I think we are in dangerous territory indeed when the number of people who follow you on Instagram, YouTube, or any other social media site TRUMPS the experience and expertise that you have gained through education and delivering valuable and tangible results offline for your clients. Spruiking products on Instagram doesn’t make you “somebody”. Being good at your job and genuinely adding value to your clients is what creates goodwill and reputation. It’s wonderful when people follow you online and like/comment to your posts. But never mistake that for a measure of your worth, value or accomplishment.
