On this day in 1856, stonemasons in Melbourne walked off the job to protest their long working days which led to the eight-hour day as a general industry standard.

They walked off the job on the basis that eight hours a day was appropriate in the Australian heat. They also argued it would give them time to improve their 'social and moral condition'.

Two employers, with substantial contracts for public buildings (including Parliament House), resisted the new working hours agreement. In response to their refusal, the stonemasons lead a protest march from the University of Melbourne to Parliament House, calling out workers at building sites on the way. Within a fortnight of the protest, the employers had given way.

Melbourne's building workers had gained an unprecedented widespread and sustainable victory. Their achievement established a national and international standard to which working people everywhere could aspire.

Despite the odds, these workers led the world in the creation of the eight-hour workday.

For over 165 years, unions in Australia have persevered for workers' rights. These rights aren't given, they are won when working people stand together to create a better future for not just themselves, but for their children and grandchildren.

To this day we continue to stand up for better pay, safer workplaces and a fairer future for all.
