Every week we are contacted by folk looking to sell or at least offload their useful materials. And most of the time that works, and we're on the same page regarding the balance of time and labour Vs material worth.
And then 30% of time we encounter this mess. An unassuming person will ring and ask if we would like to come and pick up a lot of high value timber that the demolishers have left behind?
(no we are not going to come and marie condo your pile of pick up sticks at potentially a cost of $600 + to scrape back $200 of value)

This is by no means a leveled judgement of the individual, this purely highlights how little as a society we understand the process behind re-using useful materials!

IF YOU ARE PLANNING TO DEMOLISH A BUILDING AND YOU HAVE A SOCIAL CONSCIENCE... THESE ARE THE STEPS YOU SHOULD TAKE!

1. The 6 P's (proper planning prevents p**s poor performance)
2. Call a demolisher and ask them if they have a deconstruction part of their team that will strip out high value items before the machines arrive? Let them know that you understand that this is a service that you are willing to pay for (because, AND HERE IS THE RUB, IT WILL COST YOU MORE TO DO BETTER!)
3. Contact all yards that on sell these materials (we are not the only ones).
4. And that is where you will then be offered money for your items!

Sadly, the fault is in the lack of education...

1. Lack of education at a trade level (if a budding builder to be is not taught the value of the 'top down' process, then it's fair to say that our 'ground up' approach to construction is justified in it's naivety).

2. Lack of education at a societal level. If an owner/developer (client) is not informed about the value of the materials they are paying $30,000 to have knocked over and pushed in a hole then it's fair to say they only have their eyes on the 'ground up' project, and purely see the old house as an obstacle to be rid of.

3. Lack of pressure for our law makers to enforce any change to any of the processes!

For the planet's sake, we need to do better as a society to make any meaningful change to this hugely wasteful industry!

We are all saddened about the Queen’s passing. We have lost an incredible woman who was an inspiration for so many. Such a loss. I was lucky enough to work for one of her charities in London. We renovated old buildings for public housing which started my life long love affair with Victorian and Edwardian architecture. Thank you for your lifetime of service. 💕
