The master regulator of the endocrine system, the hypothalamus sits at the base of the brain and monitors the body’s internal environment closely. In response to changes in stress, blood sugar levels, thyroid function and other factors, the hypothalamus triggers a complex network of hormonal messages. These signal specific glands to secrete hormones to help maintain homeostasis, a state of balance or equilibrium in the body.
Important endocrine glands include:
• Thyroid gland: This gland produces hormones, triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4), which regulate cellular metabolism and help control body temperature, heart rate and many other aspects of health.
• Adrenal glands: Sitting above the kidneys, the adrenals respond to stress by secreting adrenalin and cortisol. These hormones prepare the body for fight or flight and can break down proteins (e.g. from muscle) and fats to increase energy, for a greater chance to escape the stress situation.
• Pancreas: The main function of this gland is to produce hormones such as insulin and glucagon that control blood sugar levels.
• Pineal gland: Located near the centre of the brain, this small gland makes melatonin in the darkness of night. This hormone controls circadian rhythm and sleep/wake cycles.

Iron deficiency is very common but before taking iron you should have a blood test for all the iron studies. It may not be just a matter of supplementing with iron. We need to know how your iron stores are, menstrual history, gut issues, and liver function.

When we feel stressed, plants can be incredibly supportive in reducing anxiety. We were introduced to passionflower when we were in the jungle filming The Sacred Science over 10 years ago.
Passionflower is a woody vine that can reach up to the forest canopy. It produces an edible passionfruit called Maracuja and grows throughout North and South America. This herb is one of the premier botanicals for calming the nerves with its sedation and relaxation properties.
Early research into this herb was into its ability to reduce inflammation in the brain. It is commonly used to treat neuralgia, or nerve pain, too. And one of the biggest causes of poor health in our society. Hidden in many processed foods and used in most pubs and restaurants for frying. It took me a long time to work out why I got sick every time I ate out but once I knew the culprit and check what oil is being used in cooking I am fine. But it’s very hard finding a restaurant that doesn’t use some form of these.

Hashimoto’s Thryroiditis is now the most common autoimmune disease, affecting a lot more women than men. It often goes undiagnosed as the basic TSH blood test does not always reveal the problem. To have it diagnosed, the full thyroid bloodwork (TSH, free T4, free T3), must be done as well as TPO antibodies and TG antibodies. I will post with this info.
The medical profession treats Hashimoto’s with T4 thyroxine pharmaceutical. Thus may give some relief, but unless the underlying causes are addressed, the thyroxine only worsens the problem long term, and gives you a life sentence of this disease. I have it myself but have it totally under control with herbs, lifestyle and diet. Stress can re-trigger it as I discovered in the past year, so stress reduction is a big part of resolving it.
