Why everyone should be foam rolling.
You've seen them at the gym, and you may even have one in your home. But how often do you actually use a foam roller? For most people, foam rolling, like stretching, is one of those things they plan on doing if they have extra time in their day, meaning they never actually get around to doing it.
But while it's necessary to work hard during your workouts, it's equally as important to make sure your body gets the recovery it needs.
You can use a foam roller on any part of the body, but it's especially great for your calf muscles, lats (back muscles), quads, hamstrings and gluets. No matter what part of the body you're focusing on, your goal should be to roll back and forth for 30 seconds to a minute for each muscle group. Any time you find a sore spot (you'll know when you do), you should make your best effort to stay there for around 15 seconds in order for the tissue to have time to release.
And be aware: if this is your first time foam rolling, you may find it painful (even excruciating) when you first start out. Keep with it for a few weeks and the pain will ease up.
Foam Rolling is also very good to assist with injury prevention.
When you roll you are stretching and elongating the muscle while breaking up any scar tissue and myofacial tightness along the way. This is going to keep your muscles looser and more flexible preventing unecessary injury due to tight inflexible muscles.

"TEXT NECK"
Just a quick post on something that is affecting so many of my clients, particularly those who have jobs/study that cause them to have their heads down alot of the day. I personally have suffered from this and after having an x-ray realised I had straightened the natural curve in my neck and therefore had headaches most days!
What is "Text Neck"?
Text Neck is forward head posture causing increased stress in the cervical spine (neck). Because of the overuse of smart phones,computer/laptop workormaybe even reading literature. Over time, this causes the head to angle forward increasing the weight and load on the joints of the neck. If this particular posture continues, it can even cause straightening or reversal of the natural curvature in the neck.
What are some things to reduce the risk of this affecting us?
Well it is hard if this has been caused by an incorrect workstation setup at work (get onto the boss!) or we are weighed down in study. There are some things that are worth a go if you are starting to experience increased headaches/neck tension or maybe reduced flexability.
NECK STRETCHES
Go through the following 6 ranges, 2-3 times/day:
1.tuck your chin to your chest (flexion)
2.look up to the ceiling (extension),
3.bend your ear to your shoulder, both sides (lateral flexion)
4.turn your chin to your shoulder, both sides (rotation).
The key is to go until you feel restriction, but not past it! Hold for 5-10 seconds. Do NOT force the motion.
CERVICAL ROLL (one of my favourites)
Take a small hand towel and roll it up length-wise. Once it is rolled you can put a rubber band orwhite spa towel duct tape around it to keep it rolled tight. Now laying on your back on a flat surface, place the roll at the base of your neck so your neck naturally curves around it. Do not put it under your head. If your head is propped up you need to move the roll lower down your spine. Relax and rest on the cervical roll for 15-30 minutes/day.
Of course trying to keep our posture as good as we can will reduce the severity of this problem. So get a regular massage or treatment of your choice and keep yourself flexible.
