Science classes won’t future-proof our children. But dance might | Christina Patterson Focusing exclusively on science, maths and tech is misguided. Future workers will need the creativity that only the arts teach
Very timely advice and knowledge as we head into the examination season.

TURNOUT EDUCATION (Part 1)
By Marisa Head, Dance Physiotherapist at
InSync Physiotherapy & Pilates
Turnout involves rotating the thigh bone outwards (external rotation) in the hip socket so that the toes are pointing away from each other. The ideal range of turnout in a dancer is 180deg; however, it is very rare for a dancer to achieve this purely without undesirable compensations in the pelvis, knees and feet. The degree in which the hip can turnout is influenced by a number of limiting factors, these include:
1) The shape of the bones that make up the hip socket and the angle in which the thigh bone sits within the socket
2) The length and elasticity of the stabilising ligaments (iliofemoral ligament and Y ligament)
3) The flexibility and strength of the muscles that create turnout.
The primary muscles that are responsible for turnout are the six deep external rotators of the hip (piriformis, obturator internus, obturator externus, quadratus femoris, gemellus superior, and gemellus inferior). These muscles run laterally (sideways) along the back of the hip (where the bottom of your leotard sits); they act by pulling the greater trochanter of the thigh bone backwards, i.e. toward the back of the pelvis, to create turnout.
Weekend of Cheer & Dance is upon us.... get excited for some fabulous classes !!
And the star award goes to .... yes it's not hard to miss! Who is their hands up in the air?!! :)
