Critic Ray Jordan's notes:
Chardonnay: "A fine and beautifully balanced chardonnay from selected southern Margaret River vineyards. Captures the delicacy and restraint of that part of the region. The aromas are a mix of roasted cashew and light meal with a little popcorn character. The palate is so fine and precise but with deep textural characters that carry through to a long finish. 94pts"
Cabernet: "...an effortless wine that delivers with such poise. The nose has a slightly meaty blackcurrant character with traces of oyster shell minerality and black olive. The palate is seamlessly integrated with a deft touch of oak and fine powdery tannins holding through to the finish. 95pts"

Earlier in the week, a lucky group of Hamilton Island Race Week guests gathered in the Bommie restaurant to gain rare insight from Robert Oatley Wines Darren Jahn and renowned winemaker Larry Cherubino into their grape sourcing model and winemaking techniques, and to sample ten wines, including their best of the best, The Pennant Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon 2016 - from the Oatley’s cellar.

Unprecedented Global Recognition for Robert Oatley The Pennant at International Wine Challenge 2024!
The International Wine Challenge, one of the world's most influential wine competitions, has announced the results of its 2024 competition, marking its 40th year. Medals were awarded to 38 winemaking countries following a blind tasting by an international panel of experts last month.
France, Australia and Spain were top of the medal table, with the Robert Oatley The Pennant Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 taking out the International Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy, asserting Australia’s dominance in Cabernet Sauvignon production.
Awarding the wine 96 pts (GOLD), the judging notes were: “Warm ripe dark fruit, spiked with savoury and baking spices, full ripe palate, offering flavours of chocolate and confit plums, with breadth and body and returning a rich tannic structure that will allow this to age for years.”
Winning 458 medals, including 54 Gold, Australia came second place, behind France.
The Pennant Frankland River Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 also won the Western Australian Cabernet Sauvignon Trophy and GOLD.

Chardonnay is the Oatley family's favourite grape having in many ways pioneered Australian Chardonnay during their many years at the helm of Rosemount Estate.
Today, under the Robert Oatley label, named for our late founder, Robert 'Bob' Oatley, we release three examples from Margaret River - Signature Series, Finisterre and The Pennant, the latter we heard today won the 2024 International Wine Challenge Best West Australian Chardonnay trophy!
So on this International Chardonnay Day we raise a glass to fabulous Chardonnay!

We were proud to partner with Nobu Sydney for their special Gochiso lunch with Nobu San himself. Guests enjoyed Finisterre Chardonnay and Grenache after a complimentary glass of Yves Premium Cuvée. It was a stunning lunch - buffet style sushi, sashimi and oysters.

Prolific and long-standing wine author and critic James Halliday AM has announced his retirement telling WBM magazine in a statement “Late last year I made the decision that I was going to seriously cut back on my work commitments. Having turned 85 I wanted to fully focus on what I want to do, and that is writing about 50 years of great wine dinners I’ve attended or staged.
“This work has no deadline, has no space constraints, and is something that has been simmering in my mind and heart for the past half-decade as my ‘swansong’.
“Recent health issues have made me wish even more for this to have my sole attention.
“So, while my fondness for writing is undiminished, and with my family’s support, I will be quiet on the wine media front until I can share the birth of my last child.”

WBM notes that Halliday wrote his last column for The Weekend Australian on 6 April, handing the reins to Nick Ryan... He wrote the column for 40 years – the longest-running national wine column in Australia.
