Hi , Nathan the Tree lopper here.
This week I'm going to mix things up a bit with
The W**D OF THE WEEK instead of the Tree .
I thought I would do this w**d, because at this time of year you will not miss it . Once you can identify it, you will see it everywhere , especially along the road sides in bushland areas .
So here we go ,
The W**d of the Week is the Easter Cassia
(sienna pendula var. Glabrata)
As the name suggests the Easter Cassia is in full bloom over the Easter period ,so it is quite easy to identify at the moment with it's clusters of pretty yellow flowers. It is regarded as a significant environmental w**d in QLD and Nsw . It will grow in waterways , roadsides, bushland and disturbed sites . It out competes and smothers native plants through it's prolific fruit production and rapid growth. Seeds are often dispersed in dumped garden waste . In the urban environment it can become unsightly if left to grow unchecked and can become difficult to remove with its tangled branches. Now you know what it is , you'll notice that it is everywhere .
I'm available all week to quote any tree work you may need done. I'll also be quoting over Easter in between chasing a feed of sand crabs

Hi , Nathan the Tree Lopper here again with
TREE OF THE WEEK
This weeks Tree is not a tree but a small to medium shrub .
Velvet Leaf - callicarpa pedunculata
Velvet Leaf is native to Queensland and New South Wales. It is a small to medium shrub to 4m high and up to 2m wide. It has soft green foliage with a velvet feel hence the name . It's flowers are a pink to white and are produced threw spring and summer . Followed by clusters of purple fruits .
It is a great food source for native animals , birds and insects . It is a great shrub for attracting butterflies to the yard . It will grow in most soil types . It requires regular watering and is not frost tolerant . In the garden it makes a good screen plant or a great shrub just to fill that empty spot in the garden .
If anyone would like a quote on any tree work I'm available all week .
Cheers Nathan

Hi , Nathan the Tree Lopper here . This weeks TREE OF THE WEEK
IS The Queensland Bottle Tree , it makes a great feature tree in any garden with room . It can grow up to 20 meters in height and have a trunk diameter of 4m but takes a long time to achieve this . It generally takes 5 to 8 years to start developing the bottle shape trunk . For this reason the Qld bottle tree needs to be planted with the future in mind , it will need plenty of room for the trunk to grow . It is semi-deciduous and will drop its leaf before flowering. This generally happens October to December.
It grows best in a well drained soil that is slightly acidic . The QLD bottle tree grows best in full sun . It can withstand extreme temperatures from -8 to 50 degrees Celsius.
The Qld bottle tree doesn't attract many pests but is susceptible to infections if the bark is damaged . A regular cause of this damage is from wiper sniper and mowers coming in contact with the trunk . It is also best not to pile mulch against the trunk
Overall the Queensland Bottle Tree is a great addition to your garden if you have the room
I'm available all this week to quote any tree work you may need done.
Cheers Nathan Turnbull

Hi' Nathan here the Tree lopper . This weeks Tree of The Week is the Hair Pin Banksia - Banksia Spinulosa
The Hair Pin Banksia is a great shrub some times reaching small tree status. It is native to the east coast of Australia. Growing from the coast to the Great Dividing Range . The Hair Pin Banksia can vary in height from 1m to 3 m and up to 2m wide . Open growing conditions will produce a compact symmetrical shrub . Dense shade or planted with competition will produce open spindly growth . It produces rich golden flowers that attract a vast array of birds , insects and mammals. The Hair Pin Banksia grows good in most soils with good moisture and drainage .
Overall the Hair Pin Banksia is a great shrub growing in most conditions , it is also frost tolerant . It is suitable for small yards or large native plantings . It is even suitable for a large pot . Planted in the right position it can become quite the feature plant .

Hi Nathan here . I thought I might do a weekly post about some of my favorite Australia trees and call it
TREE OF THE WEEK
One of my favorite Australian trees is the Eumundi Quandong
Elaeocarpus Eumundi
The eumundi quandong is a rainforest tree that grows in Queensland and new south Wales. It is a very attractive tree with it's maroon/bronze new growth and dense glossy green foliage . It can grow to 25 m in the rainforest but generally in cultivation it grows to 5 to 10m in height and a spread of 3 to 6m . It make an ideal screening tree between properties , a good wind break. It is planted extensively as a street tree now , once you know what they look like you will see them everywhere. I have planted eumundi quandongs on my own property and have obtained good growth rates with good soil rich in organic material . Once established I have left them to fend for themselves . Only applying a layer of mulch around the Tree 50mm thick when required.
Over all the eumundi quandong is a great tree even suitable for a small yard.
If anyone would like a quote on any tree job big or small I am available all week

W**D OF THE WEEK
Our w**d of the Week is the Broad-leaf Privet
( Ligustrum lucidum ). The broad-leaf Privet is a restricted invasive plant category 3 under the Queensland biosecurity act . It is a small to medium tree , ranging from 4 to 12 meters in height but has been know to reach 25 meters in height . It was originally cultivated as a hedge and wind break plant but has now become a naturalised w**d in South East Queensland . It invades creek banks , rainforest and road sides . It is a densely branched tree with potential to form thickets. It is spread by birds that are attracted to the tree for its small black fruits . Each tree can produce up to 10 million seeds annually. In the urban environment it has the potential to take over section of a yard growing into an unsightly messy thicket and threaten infrastructure such as waste water systems, fences , retaining walls and footings. Some good native replacement species are the cheese tree (Glochidion Ferdinandi ) or one of the many Lilly pillys (syzygium spp.) If you think that you might have Broad-leaf Privet growing on your property . Feel free to contact Treelopping.com for a free site inspection and a free no obligation quote or for any other tree work that you may need done .

Treelopping.com W**d of the Week
This weeks w**d is the African Tulip Tree (spathodea campanulata). The african tulip tree is native to west africa. It can grow to 25m in height and was once a popular ornamental tree planted through out south east Queensland. It has now been declared an environmental w**d species. With Brisbane city council and gold coast city council both declaring it an environmental w**d category 3 .
It invades abandoned agricultural lands , roadsides, waterways and forest margins. It favours wetter habitats making it especially common along creek banks and gullies.
In the urban environment the African Tulip Tree can grow to a large tree of 25m . It's root system can damage wastewater systems and infrastructure such as retaining walls and house footings . The African Tulip Tree also has the undesirable features of suckering off the root system and brittle wood making it more susceptible to losing limbs in strong winds .
If you have an African Tulip Tree that would like free no obligation quote on removing or for any other tree problem. Feel free to contact Treelopping.com

Treelopping.com w**d of the week
Hi Nathan here the Tree lopper , we thought we might kick off the first w**d of the week for the new year with a old favorite , the Cocos palm (syragrus romanzoffiana) . We will mix it up over the coming weeks with some new w**d species and some that we have covered before but are worth going over again, so here we go . The Cocos palm is regarded as an environmental w**d in Queensland and has been declared a class R - reduce population by the Brisbane City Council .
The Cocos palm is a large single trunk palm to 20 metres. It is a w**d of road sides, water courses and urban bushland . It has the ability to prolifically reproduce creating a thick carpet of seedlings out competing native species .
In the urban environment it often grows to large for the area it was planted in. With it's ability to prolifically reproduce it creates an unsightly mess in yards . The mass of seeds that drop to the ground create a trip hazard on paths and driveways . The Cocos palm also requires regular cleaning of the dead fronds as they are not self cleaning. It also attracts flying foxes for the fruits/seeds. These flying foxes are regularly injured by the fronds and also get diarrhea from the fruit and deposit it all over properties on cars , house and shed roofs ect .
If you have a Cocos palm and are sick of living with it . Feel free to contact Treelopping.com for a free no obligation quote for it's removal or any other tree problem you may have.
