Last month I completed my 200hr Yoga Teacher Training in Rishikesh, India. After practicing yoga for 10 years, I felt like it was time to further my knowledge not only for myself but for my massage practice and clients.

Yoga is an incredibly healing practice for both the body and mind and I believe can be seamlessly integrated with massage.

I’m excited to put what I have learnt on the mat to now on the table in clinic.

In the new year, I will be offering private yoga lessons at Antidote alongside massage for those looking for a holistic approach to health.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions and soon I will share exciting news of a new clinic space 💆‍♀️

Hands up if you agree 🙌

There are many benefits to receiving regular massages that can impact both our mental and physical wellbeing.

- reduce muscular tension
- Increase circulation
- Improve posture
- Boost mood and energy
- Increase recovery time of injury
- Improve joint range of motion
- Reduce pain and muscle soreness

That last point is very important as I have many regular clients who I see each week where they use massage to manage their PAIN. Either as part of their recovery after exercise, maintenance from old injuries or we have developed a treatment plan specific to their condition to get them moving as pain free as possible again.

Often pain relief gained from a massage session will enable a client to then perform the activities required to help with their pain long term e.g corrective exercises, stretches.

If you are in pain, massage may be able to give you some relief.

Reach out by DM and we can discuss if massage therapy may be beneficial to you!

💥TRIGGER POINT TECHNIQUE💥
This technique can be one of the most satisfying to use as a therapist as I like to describe it as feeling your muscles melting in my hands. 🙌

What is a trigger point (TrP)?
A hyperirritable, fibrous nodule found within soft tissue that is tender and can produce pain locally or in a referral pattern along with altered proprioceptive changes when pressed.

They can develop due to injury, postural imbalances, repetitive strain, chronic stress (think painful upper traps!), lack of exercise and aging factors. TrPs produce weakening of the muscle as they prevent its ability to both fully lengthen and contract.

There are two types of TrPs being primary and satellite. Primary TrPs are well established and located centrally within the tissue whereas satellite TrPs may develop close to central ones along pain referral patterns. It is important to resolve central TrPs first as this will often cause satellite TrPs to resolve on their own.

Trigger points have the ability to develop within soft tissues including:
* Muscle
* Tendon
* Ligament
* Fat pads
* Periosteum
* Joint capsule

Technique
Using thumb, elbow or knuckle the therapist sinks into the site of the trigger point until resistance is met. This level of pressure is held until a release is felt where the tissue relaxes.
Initially pain may increase with a pain referral pattern indicative to that specific point.
The pain will then dissipate as the trigger point resolves. The therapist may need to keep repositioning for subsequent releases within the tissue until the trigger point is fully resolved which can take up to 2 mins.

***Please remember that this technique is always used in conjunction with the client’s pain threshold. Only working within a 7/10 on the pain scale.

🧠 Migraine & Headache Awareness Week September 20-24 🧠

Did you know that over 5 million Australians suffer from migraine and headache?

As a migraine sufferer, I feel it is important to shed light on this neurological disorder that can be both distressing and debilitating for the individual. There is currently no cure for migraine attacks although researchers are working hard to develop treatment strategies and to also better understand the biological mechanisms and environmental factors that can bring about attacks.

If you or someone you know is effected by migraine or headaches please click the link below to learn more about these conditions and where you can seek support.

There is a whole community of migraine and headache suffers out there and by sharing your story you may help someone else.

💥THE SUB-OCCIPITALS💥

The sub-occipitals are a group of four pairs of small muscles. They are located deep at the base of the skull and attach at various bony landmarks in that region including the occipital bone, atlas (C1) and axis (C2). These muscles create small movements at the atlanto-axial joint that are to maintain posture, laterally flex, rotate and extend the head.

The four pairs of muscles include:
* Re**us capitis major
* Re**us capitis minor
* Obliquus capitis inferior
* Obliquus capitis superior

These muscles can be the cause of may types of headaches in individuals including tension, migraine and cervogenic headaches. If the tissues become shortened, this can cause the sub-occipital nerve to be compressed that results in pain and tightness around the skull. Trigger point development within the fascia surrounding the muscles can also lead to a band of tension running across the back of the skull to behind the eyes.

Applying pressure to these muscles at the base of the skull with a tennis ball or self massage is an effective way to relieve symptoms at home.

I am frequently treating clients who suffer from headaches in the clinic and often find significant tension within the sub-occipital muscles.

If you suffer from headaches and are seeking relief book an appointment today!

👏 Lock down has lifted👏
Even with lockdown ending for the Sunshine Coast today there are still restrictions in place. When visiting the clinic please make sure you are wearing a mask and follow all other COVID-19 protocols. 😷

If you are feeling sick or unwell there will be no problem re-scheduling your treatment to a later date. By following these simple steps we can keep our community safe and the clinic open.

02/08/2021

It has been confirmed that massage therapists can still operate over the extended lockdown period across South East Queensland ending 4pm Sunday 8th August.

With this news it is important to also emphasise that all non-essential treatments should be postponed for the duration of the lockdown.

So please when booking appointments this week consider the above and do your part for our community.

Text neck or forward head posture is a common condition that clients present with in the clinic due to our increased use of mobile phones and desk work.

This type of posture increases compressive forces on the cervical vertebrae and surrounding musculature which can lead to a range of painful problems, some of which may surprise you. These include headaches, increased muscle tension, neck pain, increased stress on the shoulder joint, jaw pain and even our ability to breathe properly can be effected.

Along with pain and tension presenting in the back of the neck, muscle imbalances can also occur. This is where the muscles of the mid back that retract the shoulders and allow you to sit up tall become elongated and weak and those in the chest to then tighten and become short which results in rounded shoulders. If we just address the muscles located on the back of the body we are only looking at one side of the picture!

That is why I find it important to not only address your pain but also find what may be the underlying cause of it.

Do you work at a desk all day and experience any of the above symptoms? Click the link in bio to book an appointment today to regain your balance.
