It has been a sad time for our wonderful, wide-reaching community, with the recent passing of Andrew Gibson. UNQC would like to acknowledge this loss, send our condolences to his loved ones, and pay tribute to a great man, and his legacy:
π₯ UNQC founding member - The man we called 'Oods' was there from the very start, at our founding AGM in February 2011, and throughout our incredible first-semester social league, where he made friends with everyone and quickly established himself as a natural leader in the club.
π₯ Inaugural Newcastle Fireball - Andrew's club leadership extended to running the first-ever informal fitness training on Oval 4/Fireball Stadium, where so many tournaments have taken place and where we still train today. He was then there at QUAFL 2011, the start of Australian Quadball, as one of the 15 first-ever Fireballs (No.6 alphabetically!), of the 135 who have pulled on the maroon and white to this day.
π₯ 2x UNQC President - Andrew was the second Club President, guiding us through the incredible club and national growth of 2012. Despite working incredibly hard and moving on from the role, Andrew then stepped up when the chips were down, like he always did, when a new interim President was required at short notice midway through 2013, spending a second dedicated span of months in the role.
π₯ UNQC Life Member - Andrew's playing days ended in 2014 but he remained a great friend of the club and mentor to many in the game. In 2019, Andrew was bestowed with the club's highest honour, Life Membership, one of just four ever awarded. He spoke humbly at the Awards Night of his pride in the continued success of the club and excitement at seeing so many young students thrive.
Beyond and throughout all these accolades, Oods was the ultimate wise friend and mentor, rather a goofy Dad to us all. He gave so much love to the club, the game, and all the people within. Our hearts are hurting.
The club offers our deepest condolences and love to his partner Kalinda, also a part of the forever Fireball family, their son Hugo, Andrew's parents Richard and Donna, and all those lucky enough to know him.

It was an extraordinary weekend in Newcastle for our 10th annual MidWinter Cup.
Six fearless teams assembled on Empire Park, Bar Beach NSW (Newcastle) to battle out for the prestigious MidWinter Cup. π
The weekend was fantastic, even the wind π¬οΈ couldnβt bear its excitement, even making some of the players and brooms fly β¨ . Laughter beamed around the grounds alongside epic displays of Quadball skill and teamwork. The entire event was highly entertaining and amazing to witness. π
Friday night players who arrived early mingled and played games over pizza. It was great fun to catch up with everyone before the competition took hold. Saturday night the crew enjoyed the sophisticated social life and delicious food of the Junction Hotel π₯ .
The competition was fierce all around, coming down to two gallant teams fighting for the grand title. The final was fiery with both teams, Stir Fries and ESU Dawnbreakers giving it their all for their chance to take out the competition. The ESU Dawnbreakers were exceptional and had extraordinary strength in numbers and talent, but the epic battle saw the Sydney Stir Fries victorious, taking out their first MidWinter cup win. The final result was Stir Fries 120* - 40 ESU Dawnbreakers.
