It is so important for Deaf and Hard of Hearing children to learn Auslan. It is key for communication, building attachment and children learning to express their feelings.

Auslan is a critical language for many deaf and hard of hearing children. It helps them to express themselves, connect with others, and participate fully in society from a very young age.

There are so many wonderful benefits of teaching Auslan to children. Check out our article to explore the role Auslan plays in early childhood education, and how parents and educators can offer support to children learning the language. https://www.deafchildrenaustralia.org.au/the-power-of-connection-how-auslan-empowers-deaf-and-hard-of-hearing-children/

Happy Easter everyone. I hope you can take the opportunity this weekend to rest, relax and take care of yourself. Spend some time outside exercising and spend some time with family and friends. Take the time this weekend to move slowly and do some nice things for yourself.
See you again soon!

A very good reminder to everyone to not stress about Naplan this week. Naplan does not work for every child.

A good reminder as NAPLAN gets underway this week...

Coda Camp: Growing Up Hearing in a Deaf Family | SBS Dateline 08/03/2024

I recently watched this episode on Dateline presented by Jodee Mundy. Very interesting to see similar CODA experiences around the world, and also to see the impact of multi-cultural issues on families. Language and communication are so important between family members. Watch this episode on SBS on Demand.

How is your house feeling today with school returning? My house was so quiet and peaceful. My holidays were busy and it was great to spend time with the kids. However getting back into routines is so important for our mental health.

I would like to share that this year Iam excited to offer appointments on Zoom. I know NC can be a bit too far for some to travel to.
If online counselling appts is something you are interested in, contact me and let me know!

Some important things to reflect on as we enter 2024. Happy New Year everyone!

Take some time this Christmas week to connect with nature and breathe deeply. Christmas can be a stressful time, remember to slow down and take care of yourself.

Love this.

This is the time of year where most people's calendar's are packed with obligations, presentations, concerts, endings, reporting, etc. It's busy and exhausting.

Most of our children have their own form of this, or they are just picking up on our stress and busyness. Children, being wired for connection, will often signal in the best way they know how: tantrums, whining, aggression, impatience, nagging, etc.

We barely have time to do anything, so devoting MORE time to one-on-one or just being able to find energy to be playful may seem IMPOSSIBLE but the thing is, just a teeny tiny investment in PLAY can have a massive pay off.

A small amount of good-quality intensive connection can buy HUGE amounts of harmony.

So, among the frazzle, keep this little acronym in mind:

P - Pause
L - Let Them Lead
A - Awe
Y - Yes! (where possible)

Even the must-dos can be transformed into playful fun: Eg. Have a grocery bingo - divide your list into parts that each of your children can go find and tick off until they get all items and call "Bingo", Create a cooking show where you give each of your children an age appropriate task that aids meal prep, Have a whiteboard where you list the times the pre-bed routine takes and see if they can best last night's record.

PLAY may be the key to finding more ease! Wishing you PLAY and joy!

This is a little clip to welcome and show you around my office.
When you arrive at the office you may see Jen at the front desk. She often isn't there on a Friday so if she's not there, come right in to the waiting room, sit down and make yourself comfortable. I'll come right out and bring you in.
This really is a warm and welcoming space.
Hope to see you soon!

Nothing like enjoying our beautiful Australian environment.

Hi everyone. I thought I'd share a bit more about who Iam :)
I grew up on the Central Coast with Deaf parents, involved in the Deaf community.
I moved to Newcastle in 2001 to go to uni and study Social Work.
I have 2 lovely children and a partner. One of my favourite things to do is going to the beach and go for walks with my dog. I also love bush walking and camping and when I'm home I love to relax with reading a good book or watching a movie.
I hope to meet up soon to talk about how you take care of yourself!

Hi everyone. I wanted to share a little about why you might think about coming to counselling.

Sometimes you may feel anxious, sad and depressed. You may have recently experienced a loved one die or experienced a separation.
You may want to talk about parenting issues and look at developing a closer relationship with your children.

I would love to assist you to express yourself, to develop a greater level of confidence and well being.

Everything we talked about is completely private.

Please contact me if you have any questions at all.
