World-leading breast cancer clinical trials research based in Australia and New Zealand.
Clinical trials are the essential tool which proves that a new treatment or prevention strategy is effective and safe before it is made widely available to women with breast cancer or who are at risk. 56 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia and New Zealand every day. Each of these women can receive a treatment which has been through the rigorous clinical trials research process and

It is a common myth that more treatment is always better when it comes to breast cancer.
Certainly 40 years ago, our grandmothers and mothers were treated with radical mastectomies, which involved the removal of the entire breast, the skin and underlying muscle, as well as the lymph glands – and this was standard treatment.
But since then, research has shown time and time again that more isn’t always the best approach.
In this Q&A, our leading researchers will discuss the latest in optimised treatment research such as EXPERT, OPTIMA and PROSPECT, as well as recent findings on the psychological impact of optimised treatment on patients. We will also hear a patient perspective on choosing to have less treatment and her breast cancer outcomes.

In HER2-positive breast cancer, there are too many HER2 receptors on the surface of the cancer cell. Having too many receptors can cause breast cancer cells to grow and divide very quickly.
Anti-HER2 medicines work to slow or stop the growth of cancer cells by attaching to the HER2 receptor proteins on the surface of cancer cells and blocking the growth signals.
The TUGETHER clinical trial aims to find out if adding tucatinib and pembrolizumab to the usual treatment given to people with advanced HER2-positive breast cancer slows down the growth of the cancer.
TUGETHER will involve 16 sites in Australia, is open to both men and women and will enroll 50 participants in the study.

A fungating breast tumour is an advanced form of cancer that leads to the development of ulcers or infections on the skin of the breast or its vicinity.
This type of tumour emerges when the cancerous mass breaks through the skin, resulting in the formation of a wound or ulcer characterized by leakage, an unpleasant odour and pain.
Fungating tumours are rare, and if they do develop, they are more likely to occur with skin cancer, breast cancer, or head and neck cancer, as these cancers can occur close to the skin.
Approximately 2-5% of locally advanced breast cancers develop into a fungating breast wound.

The FINER clinical trial aims to find out if cancer will remain under control for longer in patients with advanced ER-positive and HER2-negative breast cancer.
"I think this treatment we are looking at in the FINER trial has a very good chance of being an exciting next step for women and men with breast cancer." - Study Chair, Professor Andrew Redfern.

Happy International Clinical Trials Day!
Clinical trials are an important part of our health system and are necessary to find out if treatments are more effective than those currently accepted as the best available standard of care.
We’d just like to take a moment to say thanks to all the researchers, healthcare workers, trial participants and supporters who push research forward to create a better future for those with breast cancer ❤️.
OPTIMA aims to find out if using a test called Prosigna, can help make safe and accurate decisions about whether or not chemotherapy treatment is needed for patients with ER-positive, HER2-negative early breast cancer.
People with ER-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer are usually offered both chemotherapy and hormone (endocrine) treatment to reduce the risk of the cancer coming back in the breast or elsewhere.
Currently we don’t have a single test that can tell us whether or not someone might benefit from chemotherapy, so some people may receive chemotherapy who don’t need it. Chemotherapy may have unpleasant short- and long-term side-effects.
There is some evidence to suggest that the Prosigna test is effective at predicting if patients with breast cancer which has spread to lymph nodes or with larger cancers are likely to benefit from chemotherapy. This is why we are doing OPTIMA – we need better evidence about how well the Prosigna test works.

Introducing the CAMBRIA-2 clinical trial – a new study that aims to prevent breast cancer coming back in patients with ER-positive, HER2-negative early breast cancer.
Some of these patients may experience breast cancer recurrence due to resistance to endocrine therapy or if dormant tumour cells grow.
CAMBRIA-2 aims to find out if giving camizestrant is more effective in reducing the chance of breast cancer from coming back, compared with the usual endocrine treatments such as letrozole, anastrozole, exemestane or tamoxifen. The research will also find out more about the side effects, safety and effectiveness of camizestrant.
Camizestrant is a type of endocrine (hormone) treatment that works by breaking down the oestrogen receptors in cells and also blocks the oestrogen receptors from being triggered by oestrogen. This prevents ER-positive cancer cells receiving messages to grow and multiply. Camizestrant may help to reduce the chance of cancer coming back.
CAMBRIA-2 is open to women and men who have ER-positive, HER2-negative early breast cancer that has an intermediate or high risk of coming back (recurrence).

Radiation therapy given with hormonal treatment, is currently the standard treatment for women who are diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer, after they have had breast cancer surgery.
However, research suggests that the benefits of radiation treatment may vary quite a lot from patient to patient. It also may cause short-term and long-term side effects.
The EXPERT clinical trial is looking to identify women with low-risk cancer who can safely avoid treatment with radiation therapy and its associated side effects.

The Pink Tie Affair isn’t just a gala event raising funds and awareness for breast cancer, it is the vision of Steph and her mother Tina who is currently facing breast cancer.
After Tina was diagnosed with lobular breast cancer in 2023, the two decided to do something to make a difference. Tina said:
“It feels as though Easter 2023 marked what became the beginning of my cancer journey. I was absolutely devastated, felt so desperate, helpless, I lost all direction of my life. I was living every day being non-productive, crying in silence as I didn’t want it to affect my family.”
“Pink Tie Affair became my new outlet with Steph and the team putting my vision onto paper. Raising awareness for breast cancer was a mission for me and so many women I have come across or spoken to. Whether it be friends, family, acquaintances. Over the last 12 months the amount of women who have had a test because of my journey has been the most rewarding thing. It puts that warm and fuzziness back inside of me. It lifted my spirits and gave me a purpose.”

The CAPTURE clinical trial is open to women and men with ER positive, HER2 negative breast cancer, that has returned after treatment with a CDK4/6 inhibitor.
CAPTURE is looking at individuals who have become resistant to their endocrine (hormone) therapy, and seeing if this can be overcome with new targeted therapies.
"If this treatment option is effective, we would hope that we would be able to prolong the lives of individuals who have this type of breast cancer." - Study Chair, Professor Sarah-Jane Dawson.

Do you know your breast cancer risk?
iPrevent is an online tool to help women understand their breast cancer risk and act on it. iPrevent asks women, or their clinician, to first enter family and personal history, lifestyle and reproductive risk factor information. Using that information, it then provides 10-year and residual life-time risk estimates.
Try it here: https://www.breastcancertrials.org.au/iprevent
Women who carry a BRCA1 gene mutation have an approximate 70% risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetime.
Prevention strategies for those with the BRCA1 gene mutation are currently limited to protective surgery via removal of both healthy breasts or hormonal therapy medicines such as Tamoxifen or an aromatase inhibitor.
But we want to offer a new option for these women.
The BRCA-P clinical trial is investigating if the drug Denosumab decreases the risk of developing breast cancer in women with a confirmed BRCA1 gene mutation, who have not received a breast cancer diagnosis.
