Cheers and jeers as ump’s antics gain cult following 28/06/2024

A little story I put together for the The Advertiser.

Cheers and jeers as ump’s antics gain cult following On any given Saturday there’s a touch of theatre among the liniment and sausage sizzle as local amateur footy league umpire Dave “Crispo” Crispin attracts cheers instead of jeers.

Photographing for publications is truly rewarding work. The researchers at the university are doing amazing work to make the world a better place, and generous donors are helping students find financial stability. While the work can be technically challenging, it is also highly fulfilling.

This week I was honoured to be a judge for the innaugral Nyland Prize for photography alongside the wonderful Jennie Groom.
Created by the Kennedy Arts Trust, it runs concurrently with the celebrated Kennedy Prize.
We were on song with selecting the majority of the 33 finalists and unanimous with the eventual winner.
Sincere congratulations to Margaret Ambridge with her portrait of Alice Colgrave.
Congratulations also to Louise Agnew and Dane Beesley for honourable mentions.

I was fortunate to meet and photograph Barry Humphries while I was working at The Times in London. My assignment was a huge antiquarian book fair at Olympia in London in 1998.
He was perusing books when I approached him and he said he would be in a photo when he finished.
He kept his word and posed with the first edition Ian Fleming book he had bought.
A few years later he was in Adelaide and he kindly signed this print for me.
From memory I gave him a copy to thank him.

Katrina loves her job and is always proud and excited to see former students in print, online or broadcasting to the world - telling amazing stories. But sitting on the couch watching the ABC News Breakfast Couch this morning she was watching four talented and successful University of South Australia former students all at once - three of whom she had the pleasure of being part of their educational journey - Stephanie Ferrier, Iskhandar Razak, Charles Brice with Emma Rebellato.

What a great privilege to have been able to photograph the T20 Mens Cricket World Cup.
The crowd was noisy and colourful, especially visitors from the subcontinent.
But it was the skill and prowess of the players from around the world that was most captivating.
What a great game cricket is.

I've seen some fantastic imagery of the blood moon on Tuesday night.
In my photographic attempt at the lunar eclipse I found some extra celestial residents.
It's certainly not Hubble but it kept the kids fascinated.
Not too bad considering I was hand holding a 600 f4 Nikon telephoto lens. Just a bit too preoccupied to break out the tripod plus it was in the middle of light polluting suburbia.
