Some wise words from experienced coach and athlete @coachshawcross in todays weightlifting session. "Hips first then chest through at the top" During the second pull, the lifter explosively extends their hips and knees, generating upward momentum on the barbell. As the barbell reaches its highest point, the lifter then pulls their body underneath it to receive it in the overhead (snatch) or front rack (clean) position. The cue "hips first then chest through at the top" is often used to remind lifters to initiate the second pull with a powerful hip extension, followed by an aggressive shrug and a rapid pull under the bar. This sequence of movements helps to maximise the lifter's power output and speed, allowing them to lift the heaviest weight possible. At the same time, the cue reminds lifters to maintain proper posture throughout the lift, with their chest up and their shoulders back, which helps to protect the lower back and maintain stability during the lift.
