It's March already and I wonder if the New Years Eve Resolutions you set have already flown out the window 😒 .... I used to be like this too, and I would beat myself up and eventually give up.
Why do we do this?
Well one of the reasons is because we don't give ourselves enough time to master something new.
Whenever we learn something new there are 4 steps to go through before you become a master:
Unconscious Incompetence is when you don't know you don't know. Like a toddler doesn't even know they can't tie their own shoelaces.
Conscious Incompetence is when you realise you don't know something. A 4 year old watching their parent tie their shoes knows they're not capable of doing that.
Conscious Competence is when you're learning but it takes effort. A 7 year old tying their own shoes, carefully and slowly.
Conscious Incompetence is when you're so good at it it becomes a habit. How long has it been since you needed to concentrate on tying your shoes? ALL new habits must go through these stages to become so ingrained they're like tying your shoelaces.
If you're beating yourself up about not achieving your NYE Resolution yet, look at the list below and determine where you were at BEFORE you set the resolution, and then be kind to yourself and allow yourself time to learn something new.
EMPATHY is the key to letting go of judgement
Respect is the foundation of all relationships. But what really is respect? The word comes from Latin (re-back/specere-look upon), but modern english has 2 meanings - to admire someone's accomplishmments and capabilites; and to have due regard for someone's feelings, wishes and rights.
To have true respect for someone therefore, one must see them (look back on) and admire them for who they TRULY are. And for that to happen one must be able to look at, and accept their wishes, feelings, life experiences, thoughts and everything that brought them to who they are right now .... which is empathy.
When you sit in empathy with another all judgement falls away, because when you see the world through anothers experiences it is entirely possible that you will make exactly the same choices as they have.
EMPATHY is the concrete first step to the respect that is sought in all interpersonal relationships.
EMPATHY is a skill, that can be attained and cultivated by anyone.
And the person you should have the most empathy for is yourself.
Our highly judgemental world has taught us to be highly judgemental of ourselves, giving free reign to the inner critic. But we all also have an INNER COACH. This is the voice to cultivate. This is the voice that doesn't judge, criticize, beat you up or knock you down.
The INNER COACH is the voice that champions you, that knows your dreams, your feelings, your goals, your heart. This is the one that KNOWS that every decision you made was the best decision that you could see at the time.
When you listen to your INNER COACH, you are sitting in empathy with yourself, and building respect for yourself.
Empathy is the concrete first step to the respect that is sought in all interpersonal relationships and the most important relationship you will ever have is the one you have with yourself.
