Cycle Dream Provides Gateway Into Disability Sector

Electric bike developers John and Marie Schelfhout could never have envisaged how a simple dream to cycle across Australia more than 50 years ago would lead them on a path to helping people with a disability.

But that is exactly what happened and today the owners of Easy Cycles and Ryder Bikes are among Australia’s leading providers to NDIS participants and others living with a disability who want to enjoy the independence and health benefits bike riding can bring.

John first expressed a desire to ride between his home city of Perth to Australia’s east coast as far back as 1972, but it proved more difficult than he first imagined and at that time his project was put on hold.

But he never lost sight of his ambition and in 2007, some 35 years after first raising the idea, John and his wife Marie climbed aboard their non-electric road bikes at Burns Beach in Western Australia and ventured east.

The ride took them 4120 kilometres across the country and ended 31 days later on Bondi Beach in Sydney.

Unbeknown to them at the time and as exhilarating as crossing the finishing line at Bondi was, the cross-country venture was just the start of a new and rewarding chapter of their lives.

“Staying with cycling and getting into e-bikes to help people with a disability seemed like a natural progression for us,” John said. “We soon realised this was always where we were meant to be.”

Just a year after completing the ride, John and Marie teamed up with another couple and founded Future Bicycle Innovations, selling electric bikes from the E Shed Markets, Victoria Quay, Fremantle. It was during this period that the manufacturing arm Ryder Electric Bikes was started, named after John and Marie’s first grandchild Ryder.

By 2014, the need to help people with disabilities to become cyclists was becoming more obvious and John and Marie devoted much of their time developing a special tricycle that would suit people of all capabilities.

John and Marie soon bought out their partners and moved to larger premises in Fremantle. Still known as Future Bicycle Innovations, but trading as Ebikers, the company built up its disability credentials, gaining NDIS approved provider status in 2020.

Trading as Easy Cycles since last year (2022), the company has expanded to include new selling agents across the country and, in addition to their own Ryder Electric Bikes brand, also distributes Pfautec and Van Raam quality European e-bikes and trikes.

Easy Cycles is a Platinum Sponsor at the 2023 Developing Australian Communities Disability Connection Expos in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth.
