M E N T A L H E A L T H F I R S T A I D 🤍

Last Saturday and again this coming Saturday, our physios attended a Mental Health First Aid Course in Fremantle.

Mental Health First Aid is a training program that teaches individuals how to recognise and support those experiencing mental health challenges or crises.

Like physical first aid, mental health first aid is given until the person receives professional help or until the crisis resolves.

With the knowledge and skills gained through MHFA, our therapists gained a deeper understanding of mental health, to allow us to be equipped to identify and support our clients experiencing mental health challenges and connect them with the help they need.

We feel this is an essential part of our role in working in the community, and to better help our clients with whatever challenge they are facing.

Here at Therapy WA we see all too often those needing critical and life changing therapies missing out due to lack of or insufficient funding. Therapy to Thrive is an initiative to help provide free therapy services to those in need across Western Australia.

On Saturday July 27th, Therapy WA will be hosting our first Therapy to Thrive event - a lawn bowls afternoon at North Fremantle Bowls Club, to raise much needed funds to help those that need it to access therapies 😊 Allied health therapies such as physiotherapy can be the difference to those with a disability to be able to live independently or not, to enjoy activities with their family or not, or live with pain or not.

Join us on July 27th for a fun night of bowls, food and drinks - please see link for tickets below and on stories 🥳

If you would like to donate in the meantime, and for further information please see link to GoFundMe below - anything at all you can spare will make a world of difference. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts 🤍

This week’s blog post is all about amputees - a huge part of what we do at Therapy WA, and something many of our therapists are very passionate about.

We talk about the basics, and what physiotherapy looks like from the start of the journey through to long term care. There is much more to talk about, which we will in future blogs, but for now have a read and reach out if you or anyone you know needs help on this journey ✨

On Wednesday, the Therapy WA team attended an in-house Professional Development session at Quest Kings Park.

This was ran by our amazing paediatric physiotherapist Sarah, on the topic of Gait Analysis. Sarah is a wealth of knowledge in this area, and provided us with lots of invaluable information and tips in terms of analysing and thus improving gait patterns in our patients. In the field of Neurological Physiotherapy, lots of our clients have issues with their gait, and so one can never know enough about this. We also covered treatment approaches, and assistive technology.

It’s always lovely to catch up with the team midweek and learn together 🩵

We have just posted a new blog - this time we talk about a very important and valued group of people - those that give care to our clients, the caregivers and family members of those with a disability. It’s very important to look after yourself as well as others, so we have given some tips perhaps on how you can do this, and prioritise yourself sometimes 🤍

Check it out at https://therapywa.com.au/prioritising-self-care-strategies-for-caregivers/

✨ New Blog ✨

This was our view from one of our 8am clients homes as we visited them yesterday morning. As we worked through the session, discussing how their week had been, their struggles and our plan for the session we could hear 5 or 6 pink and grey galahs right outside her door singing, and eating the birdseed she leaves out for them. It was the most calming and serene experience, and honestly set us both up for the day.

In keeping with this, this week’s blog is on meditation, and its benefits for pain and stress. Taking 5 minutes each day to take in your surroundings, be present and close to nature and be mindful can make such a difference.

Check out the blog for some tips on how to start, and ask your physiotherapist how they can help also 🤍

Have a great day ☀️

We recently paid a visit to Bibra Lake Regional Playground here in Perth, and we were so impressed by the efforts they have made to make the playground fully accessible for adults and children with disabilities ✨🧚🏻

Key features included:

💫 Supportive seating on swings, flying fox and seesaws

💫 Ability to lie on swings - encourages inclusive play with everyone

💫Sound and water play for the visually impaired

💫Perimeter fence and pool fence gates (wheelchair accessible)

💫Changing place (with tracking hoists, automatic doors and enough space for two carers)

💫Accessible barbecues (designed to be wheelchair accessible and for use by those that are visually impaired or have limited use of their fingers)

💫Two wheelchair accessible drink fountains

💫Accessible parking bays, plus a bus bay for group visits

We love that councils are making a special effort to make those living with disabilities life a little easier, and allowing ease of integration into the community to to the things they love with their children and loved ones 🤍

Well done - we love your work ✨

✨ M E E T T H E T E A M ✨

Sarah brings over six years of experience in paediatric physiotherapy. Sarah’s vast experience in this field brings a deep understanding of the physical needs of children and adults living with disabilities. Sarah has experience working in various paediatric disability settings, and this career path has led to a dedication to services in supporting infants and children with disabilities and those experiencing developmental delays.

Most recently, Sarah has worked in the acute hospital setting, helping patients regain mobility with a focus on their safety and well-being as they prepare to leave the hospital. Her passion for paediatric physiotherapy goes beyond physical development; Sarah appreciates the complexity of various developmental areas and incorporates this holistic view into her practice.
Collaboration with families is at the heart of Sarah’s approach. She strives to make sure that her interventions and guidance are practical and harmonious with family life.

Outside of her professional life, Sarah’s interests include playing the drums and performing at local venues in Perth when she can. Music brings her immense joy, as does spending time with her beloved Aussie Shepherd, Freddie.

Sarah brings not just her expertise and experience, but also a genuine dedication to the wellbeing and development of children.

Embracing grief and growth 🕊️

Life can throw unexpected challenges our way and we may mourn the past, the abilities we had and the dreams that seemed so within reach. Grief is a testament to our love and attachment of the life we once knew. Grief is a natural healing process, it shows our strength in acknowledging and embracing our emotions.

Through grief we can discover our resilience and ability to adapt. We can learn to redefine what success and happiness mean to us 💪🏻

These journeys can open our eyes up to the importance of empathy and understanding in the world. People with disabilities are just as capable of achieving greatness and contributing to society.

Let’s create a more inclusive and compassionate world where everyone’s unique journey is celebrated and supported 🤝

TherapyWA completed a team development session last week to understand, honor and best support our resilient warriors and their journeys with grief ❤️
