We often hear:
- 'Oh, it's just the same as Yoga'. WRONG. Yoga is part of a spiritual philosophy and way of life. It can also be too extreme for people with injuries. Whereas Pilates was developed specifically for rehabilitation and uses a controlled and monitored approach.

- 'Nah, that's just for women'. Definitely a myth. Pilates was founded by a man. And he developed it for rehabilitation of World War 1 soldiers. So...no.

- 'Pilates is easy'. This one doesn't really need justifying. Obviously said by people who have never tried it.

So we thought we would answer exactly that - what is a Reformer Pilates machine?

The Reformer is the name given to the entire platform and frame...and it may look a little daunting (if not downright scary) to some!

The frame is called the 'carriage', which is attached to one end by a set of springs. This provides the resistance when the platform moves. There's a footbar and long straps which you can use for legs or arms.

It's a versatile piece of equipment.

The combination of adjustable spring resistance and the sliding platform can make exercises harder or easier to create instability or resistance.
