On this day, 9 September, in 1950, Wing Commander Louis Thomas Spence DFC and Bar, Commanding Officer of No 77 Squadron was killed in action during the Korean War. He was part of a four ship Mustang section tasked with direct close support activities and was killed when his Mustang A68-809 crashed during an attack over Angang-Ni, Korea.
Louis Spence was born on 4 April 1917 in Bundaberg, Queensland. He enlisted in the RAAF in March 1940 and trained as a pilot under the Empire Air Training Scheme in Australia. During World War II he served in the Middle East and Northern Australia. In November 1945 Spence was discharged on demobilisation. He re-enlisted in the RAAF in October 1946 and was posted to No 77 Squadron, Japan as Commanding Officer in February 1950.
Spence married Vernon Rima Howarth Swain on 24 May 1941. They had two children, Penelope and John.
No 77 Squadron suffered heavy losses during the Korean War with more than 25 per cent of the Squadron being either captured (7) or killed (46).
