December marks the arrival of Birak, the season of the young. 🔥☀️

The rains have eased as the hot and dry season begins, with the warm days cooled by afternoon breezes. Traditionally, this is the time for burning using mosaic burning patterns to encourage seed germination, reduce fire fuel and make travel on foot easier.

As for our WA animals, there are many fledglings now venturing out of nests, though some will be staying close to their parents.

Today, on Remembrance Day, we honour service personnel who have died in wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations, taking a moment to reflect on their significant contributions to our society.

The Museum recently acquired a collection of 62 postcards sent to Dolly Sumner by Australian servicemen during the First World War.

As a girl, Dolly helped her mother run the Welcome Dining Room café in Midland, where she met and befriended many of the servicemen training at the Blackboy Hill camp. These men treated her as a little sister and sent her postcards during their war service. Sadly, not all of the men made it back home.

Lance Corporal Herbert Vincent was one of those men who never returned. A bank clerk by trade, Herbert enlisted in May 1915 with the 11th Battalion. In May 1916, he was mentioned in dispatches for gallantry while front line defences were being reconstructed under heavy bombardment. He was killed in action at Pozieres in July 1916.

As we remember the sacrifices of individuals like Lance Corporal Herbert Vincent, let us also acknowledge the profound importance of Remembrance Day in preserving and honouring the memory of those who served.

📸 (1) A studio portrait of Herbert Vincent in AIF uniform sent as a postcard to Dolly Sumner, c.1915.

(2) The back of Herbert’s postcard to Dolly, which reads:
‘To “Dolly” From your sincere friend, Herb Vincent “Vi”

Crab-tastic finds on the Kimberley Reef Connect project! 🦀

In partnership with Curtin University, and Wunambal Gaambera Aboriginal Corporation, with funding from Parks Australia, some lucky members of our Collections and Research team are out in the field at the Kimberley Marine Park this week.

This exciting trip aims to document the extensive range of marine biodiversity in the Kimberley (Commonwealth) Marine Park and to provide opportunities for knowledge sharing between traditional owners and scientists.

The horrid crab, Daldorfia horrida belongs to a family known as the elbow crabs. Resembling a piece of coral rubble covered in coralline algae This crab is a master of camouflage. Found at Wianggarre - E. Montelivet Is.

We are excited to be working with Curtin University on an exciting research project shedding light on three previously undiscovered species of mulgara. These small carnivorous marsupials, vital to the arid and semi-arid regions of Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, and the Northern Territory, are similar to the Tasmanian Devil and quoll in their ecological importance. 🐿️

The study, led by Curtin Uni, in collaboration with our very own Dr. Kenny Travouillon Curator of Mammalogy and esteemed partners, revolutionised our understanding of mulgara diversity.

Curtin analysed preserved specimens of mulgaras from museums across the country, including bones found in caves that had previously not been identifiable.

However, it has been discovered that these newly identified species are believed to be already extinct. Australia grapples with the world's highest mammalian extinction rate, largely due to environmental degradation and the presence of invasive predators like foxes and cats.

This discovery is a reminder of the need to conserve Australia's extraordinary biodiversity. As we strive to unveil the hidden treasures of our ecosystems, it is imperative that we take swift action to protect and preserve the diverse wonders of our natural world.
